Vitalik Buterin's Age: Key Milestones From Childhood to Ethereum Founder
Vitalik Buterin was born on January 31, 1994, in Kolomna, Russia — a small historic town just outside Moscow.
He is currently 31 years old as of 2026.
His father, Dmitry Buterin, was a computer scientist who gave young Vitalik his first computer at age 4. According to his father, Excel quickly became his favorite toy. While other kids played with toys, Vitalik spent his time playing around in Excel spreadsheets.
At age 6, his family emigrated to Canada in search of better opportunities. He was quickly placed into a gifted program in elementary school, where he showed exceptional skill in mathematics, programming, and economics.
At 17, his father introduced him to Bitcoin — and nothing was ever the same.
Here's a quick look at how his age lines up with his biggest moments:
- Age 4 — Received his first computer; Excel became his favorite toy
- Age 6 — Moved to Canada; enrolled in gifted children's program
- Age 17 — Discovered Bitcoin; began writing for Bitcoin Weekly and co-founded Bitcoin Magazine with Mihai Alisie
- Age 19 — Published the Ethereum whitepaper (November 2013)
- Age 20 — Dropped out of University of Waterloo after receiving a $100,000 Thiel Fellowship
- Age 21 — Launched Ethereum's "Frontier" release on July 30, 2015
- Age 27 — Became a billionaire when ETH crossed $3,000 in 2021
- Age 31 — Still the only original co-founder actively developing Ethereum
What Inspired Vitalik Buterin to Create Ethereum?
The origin story starts with a video game — not a computer lab.
As a teenager, Vitalik was a dedicated World of Warcraft player. When game developer Blizzard Entertainment removed the damage component from his favorite warlock skill, he was furious. That moment planted a seed. He later wrote in his personal bio: "I cried myself to sleep, and on that day I realized what horrors centralized services can bring."
At 17, his father introduced him to Bitcoin. Fascinated, Vitalik began writing for Bitcoin Weekly, earning about 5 BTC per article — worth roughly $3.50 at the time. He later co-founded Bitcoin Magazine, one of the earliest serious publications dedicated to cryptocurrency.
After traveling the world and meeting Bitcoin developers, he noticed something: Bitcoin was great as digital money, but its scripting language was too limited for more complex applications. He proposed adding a scripting layer to Bitcoin — the community rejected it.
So he decided to build something new entirely.

Ethereum Founder Age at Launch: What Vitalik Built at 21
Vitalik Buterin published the Ethereum whitepaper in November 2013, at just 19 years old.
The paper proposed a decentralized platform capable of running smart contracts — self-executing agreements written directly in code. This was something Bitcoin simply could not do at the time.
- At 19, he wrote the whitepaper — read our plain-English breakdown of the Ethereum whitepaper by Vitalik Buterin explained simply
In early 2014, Vitalik announced Ethereum publicly at the North American Bitcoin Conference in Miami. He was 20. Alongside co-founders including Gavin Wood, Joseph Lubin, Anthony Di Iorio, and Charles Hoskinson, Ethereum raised over $18 million through a crowdfunding campaign that year.

On July 30, 2015, Ethereum officially launched — and Vitalik was 21 years old.
Many in the developer community were skeptical. A kid barely old enough to rent a car was proposing to rewire the internet. He proved them wrong. Today, the Ethereum network supports billions of dollars in daily transactions and powers thousands of decentralized applications.
Vitalik Buterin Today: The Ethereum Founder's Age, Net Worth, and Work
At 31 years old, Vitalik Buterin remains the most prominent figure in the Ethereum ecosystem — and the only original co-founder still actively working on the network.
As of late 2025, his known crypto holdings sit at approximately 240,000 ETH, representing about 0.20% of the total ETH supply, according to Arkham Intelligence. Depending on ETH's price movements, his net worth fluctuates between $760 million and over $1 billion.
He led Ethereum through one of its most significant upgrades — The Merge in 2022 — which transitioned the network from energy-intensive Proof-of-Work to the more efficient Proof-of-Stake consensus mechanism.
His 2025–2026 focus is on simplifying Ethereum's architecture to make it more accessible for developers and more scalable for everyday users. He has also proposed replacing the Ethereum Virtual Machine with RISC-V technology, a move that could significantly boost network performance.
Beyond technical work, Buterin has directed over $1 billion worth of cryptocurrency — including memecoins gifted to him by third parties — to causes including COVID-19 relief in India, AI safety research, and longevity science. He has been recognized on Fortune's 40 Under 40, Forbes' 30 Under 30, and Time 100.
