Bitcoin Briefly Falls Below $80,000: What Is Driving the Pressure?
Bitcoin briefly fell below US$80,000 toward the end of October 2026. The move followed a decline from the US$84,000 area and renewed outflows from US spot Bitcoin ETFs.
The price remains volatile around that threshold. MEXC BTC/USDT data at 09:31 WIB on October 27, 2026 showed a last price of approximately 79,962.36 USDT per BTC. The decline coincided with a change in ETF flows and greater attention to the Federal Reserve meeting. Those observations do not establish a single cause. Some pressure may come from spot selling, while forced futures-position closures can amplify a decline once it has begun.
For traders, the question is broader than whether BTC crossed US$80,000. The durability of the next move depends on buyers’ ability to absorb sell orders, changes in derivatives positioning, and the market’s response to the US interest-rate decision.

Bitcoin Tests the US$80,000 Area Again
US$80,000 attracts attention because it is a round number that traders can use as a reference. Buy orders, sell orders, and position closures may cluster in a relatively narrow area when the price approaches it.
A psychological level does not guarantee a reversal. Bitcoin can briefly move below it, recover, and test it again. The difference between a short-lived dip and a more persistent decline requires an assessment of duration, volume, and order-book depth.
At the cited MEXC snapshot, the last price of 79,962.36 USDT was approximately 37.64 USDT, or 0.05%, below 80,000 USDT. The narrow gap shows how a small move can change whether BTC appears above or below the threshold.
USDT usually trades close to the US dollar, but it is a separate asset. Differences in the USDT exchange rate, spreads, and prices across venues can make BTC/USDT and BTC/USD figures diverge.
ETF Flows Reversed Over Two Sessions
Farside Investors data show net outflows from US spot Bitcoin ETFs of US$635.6 million on October 22 and US$137.9 million on October 23, 2026. Together, the two sessions recorded US$773.5 million in net outflows.
A longer period gives a different picture. The three preceding sessions, October 19 through October 21, recorded combined inflows of US$1,074.7 million. After subtracting the two outflow sessions, the displayed total for October 19 through October 23 remained positive at approximately US$301.2 million.

The reversal in the final two sessions indicates weaker demand through this ETF group than at the start of the week. It does not describe every Bitcoin transaction worldwide or mean that every ETF investor sold.
The October 26 row also needs caution. At the October 27 check, one fund still had a blank entry. The displayed total for that session should not be treated as a final figure for the full group.
Four Factors Behind Bitcoin’s Selling Pressure
Several channels can affect prices at the same time. Each requires different evidence so that correlation is not presented as a single established cause.
A. Spot Supply and Demand
Spot prices move as buy and sell orders meet. If sellers want to dispose of BTC faster than buyers are available at a given price, the price can fall to find the next source of demand.
Trading volume alone does not reveal which side is stronger. Traders can also examine the bid-ask spread and the quantity available at different price levels. A thin order book can allow a smaller transaction to produce a larger move.
B. Futures Position Closures
Leveraged traders face liquidation if their margin no longer meets requirements. When long positions are forcibly closed after a decline, their execution can add selling pressure while liquidity is limited.
Liquidation totals should be read by asset, period, and data provider. An all-crypto total differs from Bitcoin-only liquidations. Liquidations can also follow the initial price decline and then amplify it, rather than being the first trigger.
C. ETF Flows
ETF outflows indicate that net redemptions exceeded creations across the tracked products. Creation and redemption activity can affect a fund’s Bitcoin management, although execution timing and price movements do not necessarily coincide.
Flow data provide context for demand through that investment channel. They cannot independently measure all spot selling or determine Bitcoin’s next move.
D. Expectations for the Federal Reserve
The Federal Reserve’s official calendar places the Federal Open Market Committee meeting on October 27 and October 28, 2026. Its decision and explanation can change expectations for interest rates, bond yields, and investors’ appetite for risk. Source: FOMC calendar.
The effect depends on how the actual decision differs from expectations already reflected in prices. A decision to hold rates can still produce different market reactions if guidance on future policy is tighter or looser than investors anticipated.
Why Does Leverage Increase Risk?
Leverage makes a small price move produce a larger percentage change relative to margin. The following simplified long-position example excludes fees, funding, and liquidation rules.
A trader has 1,000 USDT in margin and opens a position worth 10,000 USDT, equal to ten times the margin. If the asset price falls 2%, the simplified position loss is:
2% × 10,000 USDT = 200 USDT
That loss equals 20% of the initial margin. It does not establish the actual liquidation price because contracts have their own maintenance-margin, fee, and mark-price rules.
Risk rises when prices move quickly or order-book depth is insufficient. A stop order can also execute at a different price from its trigger, particularly during volatile conditions.
Signals to Watch Next
Bitcoin’s movement around US$80,000 should be assessed alongside indicators of demand quality:
Spot price and volume: whether a recovery has sufficient trading activity or is only a brief bounce.
Order-book depth: whether buy and sell liquidity exists across multiple price levels.
Open interest and funding: whether new positions are being added and what they cost to maintain.
ETF flows: whether daily data are complete and whether a change persists beyond one session.
The FOMC decision: how the outcome and guidance compare with expectations before the meeting.
Bitcoin’s brief move below US$80,000 shows that selling pressure can still test the psychological threshold. A recovery above it would be more convincing if sustained and supported by spot demand. A continued decline in thin liquidity could instead increase volatility. Both outcomes remain possible ahead of the Fed decision.
