Fed Meeting October 28, 2026: What a Rate Hold Means for Bitcoin

Key Takeaways

The Federal Reserve announces its rate decision on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. ET, with markets expecting it to hold rates at 3.75% to 4.00%.
CME FedWatch showed a 90.6% chance of a hold and a 9.4% chance of a hike on October 24, down sharply from near coin-flip odds after the hot September CPI report.
The bigger question is December: FedWatch prices about a 74% chance of at least one more hike, and all 100 economists in a Reuters poll expect one.
Bitcoin trades near $80,300 heading into Fed week, after dipping to about $79,100 on Saturday, its lowest level in roughly five weeks.
Fed week is packed for crypto, with GDP and PCE inflation data, Coinbase and Strategy earnings, and a $12.2 billion Bitcoin options expiry all landing by Friday.

The Federal Reserve meets on October 27 and 28, 2026, and for once the decision itself looks settled. After a hot September inflation report pushed rate hike odds close to 50% earlier this month, officials have signaled they are in no rush, and markets now expect the Fed to keep rates on hold.
That does not make this a quiet week for Bitcoin. Traders will focus on what Fed Chair Kevin Warsh says about December, how many officials dissent, and how inflation data lands the next morning. Here is what to expect from the October FOMC meeting and what it could mean for the Bitcoin price.

What to Expect From the Fed on October 28

The Decision and the Timing

The Fed will release its statement at 2:00 p.m. ET on Wednesday, October 28, which is 7:00 p.m. in Lagos and 6:00 p.m. UTC. Chair Kevin Warsh will hold his press conference 30 minutes later. The current federal funds target range is 3.75% to 4.00%, set after a 25 basis point hike on September 16, the Fed's first increase since 2023.

What the Odds Say

CME FedWatch data showed a 90.6% probability of a hold and a 9.4% probability of a hike on October 24. A Reuters poll taken October 16 to 20 found that 94 of 100 economists expect rates to stay unchanged this week. That is a big shift from mid-October, when the September CPI report showed inflation at 3.7% and briefly pushed October hike odds to roughly 44% to 49%.

Why the Fed Is Expected to Pause

ING said officials have signaled no urgency to act, and that Warsh did not talk up the chance of a move at the IMF meetings. Recent jobs data has been disappointing, and rate-sensitive sectors like housing are under strain. The 10-year Treasury yield also fell below 5% last week for the first time in a month, easing some pressure on financial conditions.
The decision may not be unanimous. ING noted that Beth Hammack, Neel Kashkari and Lorie Logan voted to hike in July and could dissent in favor of raising rates again.

December Is the Real Story

A hold this week does not mean the hiking cycle is over. FedWatch priced a 67.5% chance of a 25 basis point hike in December and a further 6.7% chance of a 50 basis point move. All 100 economists in the Reuters poll expect a December hike, compared with fewer than half in September.
Inflation is the reason. Headline CPI hit 3.7% in September, core inflation is running hot, and Brent crude closed last week near $117, its highest level since April 29, as Houthi attacks on Saudi energy facilities added to supply fears. "They'll go 25 in December, but the risk is greater they end up going 50 than they don't go at all," Mizuho's Alex Pelle told Reuters.
For Bitcoin, that means the press conference matters more than the statement. Any hint that December is locked in, or that a bigger hike is possible, could pressure risk assets even if rates stay unchanged on Wednesday.

How Bitcoin Reacted to the Last Fed Decision

When the Fed hiked on September 16, Bitcoin barely moved. It settled between $76,000 and $76,800 in the hours after the announcement, while stocks sold off and then rebounded the next day. Much of the hike had already been priced in, which is a reminder that surprises, not expected outcomes, tend to move crypto.
Bitcoin heads into this meeting in a fragile spot. It fell to about $79,107 on Saturday, its lowest level in roughly five weeks, as about $815 million in crypto positions were liquidated in 24 hours, according to Bitcoin News Digest. US spot Bitcoin ETFs still took in about $301.2 million for the week, but lost about $773.5 million on October 22 and 23 alone, according to Farside data.

What the Fed Decision Could Mean for Bitcoin

Scenario 1: Dovish Hold

If the Fed holds and Warsh sounds patient about December, yields and the dollar could ease. That would support risk assets and could help Bitcoin reclaim the $82,500 area, where its 20-day moving average sits.

Scenario 2: Hawkish Hold

This is the scenario many analysts expect. Rates stay unchanged, but the Fed signals that a December hike is likely. Bitcoin could stay stuck in its recent range, with the $79,500 to $80,500 support zone facing another test.

Scenario 3: Surprise Hike

A hike on Wednesday would catch most of the market off guard. With FedWatch pricing only a 9.4% chance, a surprise move could trigger a sharp, liquidation-driven selloff, with the $76,000 to $76,600 area as the next major support.

Key Bitcoin Levels to Watch This Week

  • $79,500 to $80,500: Support that held on Saturday. Glassnode estimates that ETF and corporate treasury holders have a cost basis near $80,200.
  • $82,000 to $82,500: Resistance near the 20-day and 50-day moving averages.
  • $84,700 to $84,900: Last week's high and the level bulls need to clear for a stronger rebound.
  • $76,000 to $76,600: The next support zone if $79,500 fails.

How to Trade Fed Week on MEXC

Fed days often bring fast moves in both directions, especially during the press conference. A few practical steps can help:
  • Know the timing: The statement drops at 2:00 p.m. ET and the press conference starts at 2:30 p.m. ET. Volatility often peaks in that window.
  • Lower your leverage: Saturday's $815 million liquidation wave showed how quickly crowded positions can unwind.
  • Set exits in advance: MEXC's TP/SL tools let you set take-profit and stop-loss levels before the announcement.
  • Watch Thursday too: GDP and PCE data on October 29 can move Bitcoin as much as the Fed itself.

Conclusion: A Hold Is Priced In, December Is Not

The Fed looks set to hold rates on October 28, and that outcome is already priced into Bitcoin. What is not settled is how firmly the Fed commits to a December hike, and whether inflation data the next day backs up that message.
With Bitcoin sitting just above $80,000, ETF flows swinging and a $12.2 billion options expiry on Friday, Fed week could decide whether Bitcoin rebuilds toward $85,000 or tests the high $70,000s. Watch the press conference, respect key levels and keep your risk management tight.

DeFi Price Manipulation Attacks Hit 43 in 2026

DeFi price manipulation attacks have reached a new reported annual high in 2026, exposing persistent weaknesses in how decentralized financial protocols value assets, manage collateral, and respond to abnormal market conditions. According to DefiLlama data cited by RootData and other industry publications, 43 price manipulation incidents had been recorded by October 21, surpassing the previous full-year high of 27 incidents in 2022. Reported losses associated with the 2026 incidents totaled approximately $199 million, although their distribution reveals a more complex security picture than the headline count suggests
