Pre-Market Briefing on Oct 30: Gen Digital +15.81% on Guidance Hike vs. Fortinet -20.09% on Minor Trim; ECI Data Due Tonight

1. Today's Market: All Three Indexes Fell, and the Nasdaq Fell Furthest

Unit: %, single-day change on October 29; all three readings are negative, so the zero line sits at the right edge and every bar runs left on one shared scale. The Nasdaq reads −1.38%, the S&P 500 −0.31% and the Dow −0.25%.

All three indexes fell together, the Nasdaq closing at 26,184.72, the S&P 500 at 7,720.39 and the Dow at 52,342.56, with the Nasdaq losing 1.13 percentage points more than the Dow and the losses concentrated in technology weighting. Alphabet closed down 12.64%, Amazon down 4.25% and Intel down 3.62%.

The technology sector averaged only −0.46% that day, yet the Nasdaq fell 1.38%. The Nasdaq is weighted by market value, so a few heavyweights can magnify the move, and Alphabet alone lost more than a tenth of its value. When an index falls, check first whether a handful of heavyweights did the damage, then look at the sector average, because the two describe different things.

2. Stock in Focus: Two of Six Cybersecurity Stocks Rose, and Gen Digital Rose Most

Unit: %, single-day change on October 29. These six are the cybersecurity software stocks within Gen Digital's industry, not the whole industry; the set spans positive and negative, so a zero line is drawn and all six share one scale. Gen Digital sits at one end on +15.81% and Fortinet at the other on −20.09%, 35.90 percentage points apart.

Gen Digital moved against its group that day. Two averages have to be kept apart: these six averaged −2.09%, while the software infrastructure industry as a whole averaged −1.24%, so the denominators differ and Gen Digital's 17.05 percentage points of excess is measured against the industry average; the other riser in the set, SentinelOne, gained only 0.47%. Gen Digital closed at $28.20, adding about $2.3B to a $16.9B market value on 11.22M shares, 1.55 times its daily average, and the price returned to 75% of its 52-week range. Earnings drove it: second-quarter revenue was $1.37B, up 12%, adjusted earnings per share were $0.74 against $0.72 forecast, paying customers reached a record 83 million, and full-year revenue guidance rose to $5.465B to $5.515B. ⚠ Management also said agentic AI will not contribute meaningfully to revenue this fiscal year, so that revenue waits for later quarters. Alongside it, KLA rose 5.45% while the semiconductor industry averaged −0.22%; foundries have to buy inspection tools before they expand, so its orders see demand earlier than chip designers do.

Five Dimensions: Relative Strength and Peer Rank Full, and Valuation Heat Lowest at 30

Unit: 0 to 100, 0 at the centre and 100 at the rim, all five axes on one scale. Relative strength reads 100, peer rank 100, trend position 75 and volatility control 70, and the lowest is valuation heat at 30.

The detail worth noticing is that the full axis is capped. Relative strength is 50 plus five times the excess over the industry, so Gen Digital's 17.05 percentage points works out to 135, which the chart can only draw as 100; under the same formula, 10 percentage points of excess already fills the axis. Trend position 75 matches a price at 75% of its 52-week range. A full score only says the stock cleared the bar, and how far it cleared it lives in the raw move.

3. What to Watch Today: Third-Quarter ECI, and Whether the Quarterly Pace Holds at 0.9%

  • At 12:30|Third-quarter Employment Cost Index (ECI) An hour before the U.S. market opens, and the first labor-cost reading before the December meeting
  • At 13:45|October Chicago PMI Fifteen minutes after the U.S. market opens
  • At 16:00 and 16:30|Speeches by Fed officials Daly and Musalem Both during the U.S. session; Wednesday's decision held rates at 3.75%–4.00% on a 10 to 2 vote, with two votes for another hike
  • Next milestone|December 8 to 9 FOMC meeting The last of the year
  • Timing note The U.S. market currently opens at 13:30 and closes at 20:00, and both move one hour later once winter time begins

Unit: %, seasonally adjusted quarterly change in total employment cost, covering all workers in private industry and government; bars from zero on one shared scale. 25Q3 reads 0.8%, 25Q4 0.7%, 26Q1 0.9% and 26Q2 0.9%.

  • Two straight quarters back at 0.9%, about 3.6% annualized The 0.7% in 25Q4 was the slowest quarter of this cycle, and the Fed hiked 25 basis points in September after the pace climbed back; a reading of 0.9% or higher tonight keeps a December hike on the table, while a drop back toward 0.7% would count as easing
  • Why the quarterly change, not the annual one The annual figure drags in the base from a year ago, while the quarterly change shows whether the last three months reaccelerated; the ECI counts wages and benefits together, so shifts in the mix of jobs move it less than monthly average hourly earnings
  • Benefits, not tech salaries, are holding costs up Through June, private-sector wages rose 3.1% from a year earlier, with information at 2.9% and professional and technical services at 2.6%, while benefit costs rose 3.8%; so a hot ECI hits technology stocks through the discount rate first, not through payroll

4. Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Fortinet beat on revenue and earnings per share, so why did it fall 20.09%?
A: Fortinet's third-quarter revenue of $2.08B and earnings per share of $0.91 both beat expectations, and billings grew 29% to $2.3B. But it lowered full-year service revenue guidance from $5.18B–$5.22B to $5.15B–$5.17B, trimming the midpoint by less than 1%. Gen Digital raised its full-year guidance the same day and rose 15.81%. Quarterly figures describe what already happened, while the share price prices what the company says comes next, which is why the same beat can move in opposite directions. Read the guidance page first, then go back to the quarter.

Q: Gen Digital rose 15.81%. Was that an industry move or its own?
A: Mostly its own. The software infrastructure industry averaged −1.24% and the technology sector −0.46%, so the backdrop was a headwind, and the six cybersecurity stocks averaged −2.09% with only two rising. Gen Digital's 17.05 percentage points of excess over the industry lines up with its raised full-year guidance and record paying customers. To tell whether a stock is riding its industry or moving on its own, first check which way the industry went that day, because a big gain into a headwind means something different from one with the wind behind it.

Q: Alphabet, Amazon and Intel all fell the same day. What does that have to do with tonight's ECI?
A: Alphabet closed at $283.82, down 12.64%, and what the market questioned was not revenue but free cash flow and the pace of returns on AI spending. Amazon reported third-quarter revenue and earnings per share below expectations after the close, briefly falling about 10% before narrowing, with 2026 capital spending held at about $220B. Intel briefly fell more than 17% after hours on fourth-quarter revenue guidance below expectations, which the company blamed mainly on a steeper-than-expected decline in PC revenue. Labor costs set the floor for services inflation, inflation decides whether the Fed can stop, and rates set the discount rate the market applies to AI capital spending, so a hot ECI makes the market demand returns on that spending sooner. After-hours moves are not included in closing prices, so read the two separately.
