XRP Market Cap Explained: Price, Rankings, and What Moves It
XRP is one of the largest cryptocurrencies in the world by market cap, and understanding that number is the first step to making sense of its place in the market.
This article breaks down how the XRP coin market cap is calculated, what moves it, and how it compares to other major cryptocurrencies — so you can read those charts with actual confidence.

Key Takeaways
- XRP's market cap is calculated by multiplying its current price by the circulating supply — a number that updates in real time.
- XRP has a fixed maximum supply of 100 billion tokens, all of which were created at the XRP Ledger's launch in 2012.
- Ripple releases up to 1 billion XRP from escrow each month, though most unused tokens are returned, keeping supply growth predictable.
- XRP's market cap is primarily driven by price movements, with regulatory developments and market sentiment playing a significant secondary role.
- XRP currently ranks among the top cryptocurrencies globally by market cap — though rankings shift with market conditions.
- Market cap measures total market value, not future price direction — it's a snapshot, not a forecast.
What Is XRP Coin Market Cap and How Is It Calculated?
The XRP coin market cap is the total value of all XRP currently in circulation — and the math behind it is straightforward.
As of March 2026, XRP has roughly 61 billion tokens in circulation out of a fixed maximum supply of 100 billion.
That hard cap matters: no new XRP will ever be created beyond that ceiling, since all tokens were pre-mined at the XRP Ledger's launch in 2012.
You'll also come across the term "fully diluted valuation" (FDV) — that's what the market cap would look like if every single one of those 100 billion tokens were in circulation today.
- What would a $1,000 XRP mean for market cap? See the math here.
The gap between FDV and current market cap exists largely because Ripple keeps a significant portion of XRP locked in time-released escrow contracts, releasing up to 1 billion XRP per month — though most unused tokens are returned to escrow each cycle.
What Drives XRP Coin Market Cap Up or Down?
XRP's market cap isn't a fixed number — it shifts every time the price moves or the circulating supply changes.
Three forces do most of the work.
1. XRP Price Movement
Price is the most immediate driver.
When demand rises and more buyers pile in, the XRP price climbs, and the market cap follows directly.
The reverse is equally true — a market-wide sell-off or negative news can compress the price and shrink the total market cap within hours.
2. Supply Changes and Ripple's Escrow Releases
Supply plays a quieter but important role.
Each month, Ripple unlocks up to 1 billion XRP from escrow — though the net increase to circulating supply is typically much smaller, since unused tokens are relocked.
These scheduled releases give investors a degree of predictability that many other crypto projects simply don't offer.
3. Market Sentiment and Regulatory Developments
Broader crypto market conditions move XRP just like any other asset — when Bitcoin rallies, XRP often follows.
But XRP has its own regulatory history that can hit its market cap independently.
In July 2023, a U.S. court issued a partial ruling that found XRP sales on public exchanges to retail buyers did not constitute securities transactions — a decision that triggered a sharp jump in XRP's price and market cap.
More recently, the launch of spot XRP ETFs on U.S. exchanges in late 2025 marked another milestone that brought fresh institutional attention to XRP's valuation.
XRP Coin Market Cap vs. Bitcoin, Ethereum, and the Rest
Knowing XRP's market cap in isolation only tells you so much — context is what gives the number meaning.
XRP vs. Bitcoin and Ethereum
Bitcoin and Ethereum hold the top two spots in the global crypto market by a significant margin.
XRP sits in the top five, but its market cap is roughly a fraction of Bitcoin's — which reflects the difference in adoption, narrative, and institutional depth each asset commands.
That doesn't make XRP small: an $85+ billion market cap puts it well above the vast majority of all cryptocurrencies in existence.
What XRP's Market Cap Ranking Actually Tells You
A high market cap ranking signals that an asset is widely held and actively traded — it reflects market confidence, not a prediction of future price.
XRP currently ranks among the top cryptocurrencies by market cap globally — a position it has held through multiple market cycles, though rankings shift with market conditions.
What it doesn't tell you is whether XRP will rise or fall from here — market cap is a snapshot, not a forecast.
XRP's All-Time High Market Cap
XRP's market cap is closely tied to its price history.
The token hit its all-time high price of $3.84 in January 2018, according to CoinMarketCap — a peak that coincided with the broader crypto bull run of that era.
At that price level, XRP briefly became one of the most valuable cryptocurrencies by total market cap.
Since then, the market cap has moved through bear markets, a multi-year SEC lawsuit, and a renewed rally in late 2024 and into 2025.
