Wisconsin files lawsuit against five major prediction market platforms, alleging illegal sports betting through event contracts and seeking immediate court restrictions.

Wisconsin has taken strong legal action against major prediction market platforms over alleged illegal betting practices. On April 24, the state sued Kalshi, Coinbase, Polymarket, Robinhood, and Crypto.com. However, officials claim these companies disguise gambling activities as financial tools to bypass strict state laws.

Wisconsin Says Event Contracts Mirror Illegal Sports Betting

The Wisconsin Department of Justice announced the lawsuits and explained its concerns clearly. Furthermore, Attorney General Josh Kaul has said that renaming does not turn unlawful activities into lawful ones. Thus, the state wants to prevent the provision of such services by these companies in the state of Wisconsin as soon as possible.

These platforms have event contracts based on the outcomes of sports, according to official complaints. Moreover, users will be able to make trades depending on the outcomes of the matches and get payouts. As a result, the government claims that such contracts are just like the conventional sports bets in the state of Wisconsin.

Moreover, the lawsuits point out the way these companies make money off of user participation. Every trade has a transaction fee, which creates stable revenue streams. As an example, Kalshi is said to make more than $1 billion in sports contracts each year. Interestingly, this is approximately 90 percent of its estimated annual revenue.

Meanwhile, most commercial gambling activities in the state are limited by the Wisconsin law. Online sports betting is strictly regulated, despite a few exceptions. Therefore, officials believe these platforms are bypassing legal systems by presenting bets as financial contracts.

State Seeks Court Orders While National Debate Grows

The lawsuits were filed in Dane County Circuit Court and request immediate legal action. In particular, the state is requesting preliminary and permanent injunctions against these platforms. But at this point in the case, officials are not seeking financial damages.

Moreover, the Department of Justice has termed the activities as a nuisance to the people. Governments claim that illegal betting is detrimental to the consumer and undermines the legal markets. Consequently, these services are expected to be closed down by the enforcement agencies in a short time.

Meanwhile, this action follows a new law signed by Governor Tony Evers. The legislation permits sports betting online only via systems located on tribal territory. Therefore, officials argue that external platforms violate state rules when operating outside this framework.

On a bigger scale, the case is indicative of a rising national controversy on prediction markets. Other firms claim that their services are under federal regulation by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission. But states such as Wisconsin demand that local gambling laws be used.

This legal fight may, therefore, influence the future regulations of prediction sites in the United States. Other states can also do the same in case Wisconsin succeeds. Conversely, an alternative result would increase federal dominance of such services.

Finally, the lawsuit filed by Wisconsin is an indication of a tighter crackdown on prediction-based websites. As businesses encourage innovation, regulators emphasize legal compliance and consumer safety.
