MetaMask Co-Founder Dan Finlay Departs After 10 Years

Dan Finlay, the co-founder of MetaMask, has announced his departure from Consensys after more than a decade building the popular cryptocurrency wallet. He cited severe burnout as the primary reason for leaving.

Finlay shared the news on X (formerly Twitter) early Thursday morning. “Today is my last day at Consensys, where I’ve been building MetaMask for over ten years,” he wrote. “I’m burned out and need to spend time with my family. Wishing the team the best — they have an amazing road ahead of them.”

Ethereum Foundation core developer Tim Beiko was among the first to publicly thank him. “Thank you for everything! Hard to overstate the impact MM has had on growing this entire space, can’t imagine the toll it must have taken over a decade,” Beiko said. “Glad to hear you’ll be taking care of yourself.”

The Role of a Web3 Architect

Before MetaMask, interacting with decentralized applications, or DApps, was a complicated task for most users. Only those with deep technical knowledge could navigate blockchain interfaces. MetaMask changed that. It was the first browser extension wallet, making it possible for users to securely connect with blockchain apps from their browsers.

Finlay’s work shaped modern self-custody. He designed the first version of “Snaps,” which lets third-party developers safely expand the wallet’s features. He also created “The Gator,” the first version of MetaMask’s readable permissions smart account. Sharing his thoughts on recent achievements, Finlay said, “I am over the moon that we recently finally shipped advanced permissions.” He described it as a “big missing piece” that he looks forward to using as a regular consumer.

An Unlikely Path to Crypto

Finlay’s career before blockchain was diverse. He worked as a full-stack software developer at Apple in Cupertino from 2013 to 2016. For over five years, he owned and operated “Tricera-Tops,” a custom screen-printing business run from his garage. He also spent time teaching kids how to make video games and websites for the City of Oakland. He worked as a chess instructor and performed in unscripted comedy shows for ComedySportz in San Jose for nearly seven years.

His exit marks the end of an era for MetaMask. The wallet remains a central tool in the Ethereum ecosystem, but its co-founder is stepping away to focus on his health and family. The team at Consensys will likely continue building without him.
