BAGUIO, Philippines – At just 18, Mark Dave Nicolas appeared destined to become the province’s greatest athlete since Teofilo Yldefonso, the legendary “Ilocano Shark” who carried Philippine swimming onto the Olympic stage nearly a century ago. Nicolas was doing for track what Yldefonso once did in the pool, carrying provincial pride through the 1928 and 1932 Olympics.

The teenage runner stunned the country at the 2025 Palarong Pambansa after clocking 1:53.20 in the boys’ 800 meters, setting a new national record and winning gold. Months later, he captured silver in the same event at the 14th ASEAN School Games in Brunei, cementing his place among the nation’s brightest young athletes.

He was former Ilocos Norte governor Michael Keon’s prized find, supervising his training when he was still in elementary school.

Then, almost without warning, Dave was gone.

The Adamson University standout died April 29 at the Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital and Medical Center in Batac after days of worsening pain that began with what he initially believed was a small boil on his leg. No official cause of death has been publicly announced by the hospital.
