Algorand powers UK’s first blockchain water reuse credits as YTL and Hypercube tokenize treated wastewater serving 2.9M people.

Hypercube and YTL Enterprises have launched the UK’s first blockchain-verified water reuse credit system, built on Algorand.

The project converts treated wastewater into tokenised credits under Hypercube’s WTR standard.

It links water reuse, digital verification, and local reinvestment as pressure grows on freshwater supplies.

YTL Enterprises and Hypercube Launch UK Water Credit

YTL Enterprises, the commercial innovation arm of YTL Construction UK, has partnered with Swiss technology firm Hypercube.

The partnership will issue blockchain-verified water reuse credits in the UK. Hypercube issues the credits under its WTR water credit standard.

The system records reused water and turns it into digital credits for businesses.

The project uses treated and recycled wastewater from Wessex Water’s recycling centre in Avonmouth, Bristol.

Every one cubic metre of recycled water becomes one verified digital water credit.

Businesses can buy these credits to address water use and support water-positive plans.

The credits are designed to offer measurable and traceable proof of water reuse.

The project also connects YTL Enterprises to the international water credit market. YTL said the model can support wider water resilience efforts.

Algorand Supports Verification and Credit Tracking

The water reuse credit system is built on Algorand. The blockchain supports verification, record keeping, and lifecycle tracking for each credit.

The project connects to Wessex Water’s operations, which serve 2.9 million people across the region. Avonmouth’s treatment facility converts treated wastewater into verified digital water credits.

Hypercube said blockchain can reduce risks linked to unclear records and double counting. The company uses digital tracking to give buyers clearer credit records.

The WTR standard draws lessons from carbon markets and compliance systems. Carbon markets have faced concerns over verification, registry quality, and credit tracking.

Hypercube said its system uses “precision over estimation, immutable verification, and transparent lifecycle tracking.”

These features aim to support stronger assurance for credit buyers.

Moreover, the model forms part of real-world asset tokenisation, and the digital credit links directly to a measured volume of reused water.

Credit Sales Will Support Local Water Projects

A portion of each credit sale will be reinvested into local water resource projects. These may include wetland restoration, river health work, and community water resilience schemes.

The structure supports reduced freshwater abstraction. It also aims to direct funds toward local environmental work in Bristol and nearby areas.

Richard McCluskey, head of commercial and customer at YTL Enterprises, said reuse can reduce pressure on nature.

He said: “Every litre of water we reuse reduces pressure on the natural environment.”

McCluskey added that confirmed credits can help show results with integrity. He said the partnership with Hypercube marked “a step change for water stewardship in the UK.”

Pietro Gorgazzini, managing director of Hypercube, said the UK launch sends a clear message. He said the UK is known as a rainy country, but water must still be protected.

Gorgazzini said water has become a strategic resource.

He added that people should manage it efficiently in both plenty and scarce conditions.

The launch comes as population growth, climate change, and industrial demand place pressure on freshwater systems.

The UK is seeking more can grow ways to manage water use.

YTL Enterprises said the partnership supports its wider work on resource protection and environmental strength.

The project also supports round system economy goals through reuse, checking, and putting money back.
