Kukkiwon has officially launched a blockchain-powered digital certification system aimed at modernizing Taekwondo qualification management and improving administrative efficiency. The organization announced the introduction of the mobile application known as Kukkiwon Digital ID, enabling practitioners and instructors to access poom and dan certificates directly through smartphones.

The move marks a significant transition away from traditional paper certificates and plastic identification cards that have long been used within the Taekwondo community. Officials indicated that physical certificates frequently faced issues, including damage, loss, forgery concerns, and exposure of personal information. The new digital infrastructure was developed to address these longstanding challenges through blockchain and decentralized identity technology.

According to Kukkiwon, the newly introduced system uses Decentralized Identity, commonly referred to as DID, to strengthen certificate security and improve verification reliability. The technology allows users to securely store and access qualification credentials in a mobile environment without depending on physical documentation.

Blockchain Technology Enhances Security and Accessibility

Kukkiwon has launched the blockchain-based Kukkiwon Digital ID app, enabling Taekwondo practitioners and instructors to store and verify poom and dan certificates directly through smartphones.

The organization stated that the mobile application would support a broad range of digital certifications. Users will reportedly be able to receive 13 different poom and dan qualifications, covering first through fourth poom and first through ninth dan certifications. In addition, the platform will also provide digital access to 14 separate certifications connected to the World Taekwondo Academy.

Industry observers believe the transition could significantly improve convenience for practitioners, instructors, and administrators by reducing dependence on physical documentation. The app is expected to allow certificate holders to verify and manage credentials from virtually any location while improving efficiency during competitions, training sessions, and official administrative procedures.

A major component of the new system involves QR code-based qualification verification. Through this functionality, users can authenticate certifications directly within mobile environments, simplifying verification processes at dojangs, tournaments, and institutional checkpoints.

Digital Verification to Streamline Administration

The integration of decentralized identity technology and QR-based verification is expected to improve security, reduce forgery risks, and streamline administrative authentication processes across the Taekwondo ecosystem.

Kukkiwon officials indicated that the digital transformation is also intended to strengthen personal information protection standards. By moving certifications into secure digital storage environments, the organization aims to reduce risks associated with lost documents and unauthorized access to sensitive user data.

Yoon Ung-seok reportedly explained that the introduction of digital poom and dan certificates could represent a major turning point in improving the credibility and reliability of Taekwondo qualification systems. The leadership also emphasized plans to continue adopting digital technologies to strengthen the international reputation and long-term value of Taekwondo.

The Kukkiwon Digital ID application has already been made available through both the Google Play Store and Apple App Store, allowing users across multiple mobile platforms to access the new certification system.

Plans for Global Expansion Under Review

Kukkiwon further indicated that additional linked services may be introduced following the stabilization of the digital certificate ecosystem. The organization is reportedly reviewing the development of a globally accessible administrative framework capable of supporting international Taekwondo operations more efficiently.

Kukkiwon is also exploring broader international expansion of its digital administrative framework to support global Taekwondo certification and identity management systems.

Analysts noted that the initiative reflects a growing trend among sports organizations and educational institutions adopting blockchain-based credential systems for secure digital verification. By integrating decentralized identity infrastructure into martial arts certification management, Kukkiwon appears to be positioning itself at the forefront of digital transformation within the global sports administration sector.
