Sally Kirkland, Oscar-Nominated Actress, Dies At 84

Sally Kirkland, who reached the height of her career with an Academy Award nomination and a Golden Globe win for her performance in the 1987 drama Anna, has died. She was 84.

Her death was confirmed by her representative, who said Kirkland passed away on November 11 at a hospice facility in Palm Springs, California, following a series of health complications.

Born October 31, 1941, in New York City, Kirkland began her career in the Off-Broadway theater scene of the 1960s before transitioning to film and television. According to IMDb, she amassed over 250 acting credits over six decades. Her film roles included supporting turns in The Sting (1973), The Way We Were (1973), JFK (1991), EdTV (1999), Bruce Almighty (2003), and 80 for Brady (2023). But it was her portrayal of a fading Czech actress struggling to rebuild her life in New York in Anna that cemented her status as one of the era’s most respected performers.

On television, Kirkland was a familiar presence, guest-starring in dozens of series including Toma, Baretta, The Rookies, Three’s Company, Kojak, Falcon Crest, Murder, She Wrote, Roseanne, and Days of Our Lives. She also appeared in the syndicated drama Valley of the Dolls in the mid-1990s and continued to work steadily into her 80s.

“Anyone who knew Sally’s work as an actress understands that she was a master of her craft, in large part because of her profound and genuine compassion for all people,” Kirkland’s representatives said in a statement.

In addition to her screen work, Kirkland was known for her mentorship and activism. She served as a minister in the Movement of Spiritual Inner Awareness and frequently spoke about healing, spirituality, and self-empowerment.

Despite facing serious health challenges in recent years — including multiple injuries and a dementia diagnosis — Kirkland remained deeply connected to her artistic community.

“She lived and breathed the arts,” said a longtime friend in a statement. “Every performance, no matter the size, was infused with her passion and humanity.”
