In just a few days, Taylor Swift will release The Life of a Showgirl, which is easily the most highly-anticipated album of the year. The set is coming on October 3, and it will almost certainly become not just another No. 1 for the singer-songwriter, but perhaps the bestselling title of 2025 after just a few days of availability.

Ahead of the album – which will apparently bring her back to pure pop, if all hints are correct — one of Swift’s fan-favorite tunes that never earned its due in the spotlight almost becomes a Billboard chart hit thanks to a massive uptick in sales.

Taylor Swift’s “Dress” Sales Surge Nearly 8,000%

Purchases of Swift’s song “Dress” exploded recently. Luminate reports that in the past tracking frame in America, the tune sold a little more than 1,000 copies, while the period before it managed just over double-digit purchases. That’s an uptick in sales of a little less than 8,000% from one frame to the next.

Did Taylor Swift’s “Dress” Hit the Billboard Charts?

Despite such an enormous increase in interest – and certainly sales – “Dress” doesn’t appear on any Billboard charts this week. Such an improvement in purchases would usually send a composition straight to the Digital Song Sales list, but that was not to be this time around.

This frame, Vince Gill’s “Go Rest High on That Mountain” debuts in last place on the 25-spot roster, selling a little more than 1,400 copies. That’s several hundred more than Swift, and there are more than a dozen songs in between them on the unpublished ranking of the bestselling cuts throughout America.

Why Did Taylor Swift’s “Dress” Go Viral?

“Dress” recently went viral recently for several reasons. Swift announced her engagement to football player boyfriend Travis Kelce at the tail end of August. The revelation immediately had people on social media and fashion and beauty journalists discussing what she might wear at her wedding. There were countless sentences published with the name “Taylor Swift” and the word “dress” near one another, which likely led many to return to the tune, either on streaming platforms like Spotify or Apple Music or on iTunes to purchase it.

How Taylor Swift’s Engagement Helped Her Years-Old Song

Swift announced her engagement on Instagram with photos that show the proposal taking place. The dress that she was wearing in the images, a Ralph Lauren number that retailed for $400, immediately became a best-seller, and the fashion label sold out. That caused another round of stories and plenty of conversation on social media about where it came from and what she was wearing, which again lumped Swift’s name with the word dress.

How Taylor Swift’s Reputation Changed Her Sound and Image

“Dress” is one of the lighter moments off of Swift’s 2017 album Reputation. That set, which gave her another No. 1 on the Billboard 200, is remembered as a sonic shift, as it pushed her from the simple pop of 1989 — which spawned smashes like “Blank Space,” “Shake It Off,” and “Bad Blood” — into a more electronic sound. Reputation also carried darker themes, as it dealt with her issues with fame, how the media discusses her, and even feuds with other musicians.

How “Dress” Stood Out on Taylor Swift’s Reputation

While it was never pushed as a single, “Dress” did receive quite a bit of attention when Reputation was first shared with the world. The tune is much more adult in nature than many of her past recordings, and it allowed Swift to openly discuss her sexuality in a way she hadn’t prior. For much of her career, Swift had positioned herself as family-friendly, and at times even anti-sexual. “Dress,” in which she crooned that she only bought a dress so a man could take it off, was a daring pivot for her.

Reputation’s Singles: From “Look What You Made Me Do” to “Delicate”

Swift never chose “Dress” as a single from Reputation, which did manage to produce several big hits. Lead cut “Look What You Made Me Do” became an immediate No. 1 on the Hot 100, while the only other top 10 from the project, “…Ready for It?” peaked at No. 4. Fellow proper singles “End Game” with Ed Sheeran and Future and “Delicate” just missed out on the highest tier, stalling at No. 18 and No. 12, respectively. Promotional tracks “Gorgeous” and “Call It What You Want” also managed to find space inside the top 40 for a short time.

Would Taylor Swift’s “Dress” Chart If Released Today?

These days, whenever Swift releases an album, every song featured on it makes its way to the Hot 100 for at least a week. That wasn’t the case back in 2017, when the music industry operated a bit differently, when landing a Hot 100 win was more of a feat, even for superstars. There are plenty of well-known Swift tunes that never appeared on that competitive list, such as “Dress,” which would likely add to her growing total if it was released today or went even more viral than it has recently.
