After surviving a third assassination attempt, U.S. President Donald Trump argued that building a White House ballroom was a matter of national security. Trump's critics maintained that the ballroom was merely a vanity project, not motivated by genuine national security concerns. But the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), in a mid-May legal filing, reiterated Trump officials' claims that the ballroom is crucial to national security.

In the document, the Trump DOJ argues that ballroom opponents are suffering from "Trump derangement syndrome." The filing called for a legal injunction against the ballroom to end.

The document reads, "National Security requires unimpeded construction of the Presidential Ballroom, without disruption or delay. The assassination attempts make clear what Defendants have been explaining from the start of the case: Presidents need a secure space for significant events, which currently does not exist in Washington, D.C., and this Court’s injunction stalling this Project cannot defensibly continue. To ensure construction proceeds, and to conserve judicial resources, this Court should immediately issue a ruling indicating that it would dissolve its injunction at once."

The filing argues that the injunction against the ballroom was "improper from its inception" and that opponents have "no grounds to interfere with the National Security by attempting to impose…. personal preferences over the security interests of this President, of all Presidents into the future, as well as their families, Cabinets, staff, visitors, and many others."

On X, the DOJ filing is being criticized as something that sounds like it was posted on Trump's Truth Social platform, attacking it as legally flawed.

"There it is: Another Truth Social-style court filing by Justice Dept," Scott MacFarlane wrote.

Tucson, Arizona-based attorney Janice R. said of the DOJ filing, "Any lawyer signing this crap should be embarrassed and then sanctioned. Just pathetic."

Attorney Robert Laredo took exception to the Trump DOJ describing the ballroom as a "gift."

Laredo posted, "Ummmm... it's not a GIFT if WE F– – PAY FOR IT."

Retired attorney Terry Dunlevy tweeted, "These Trumpers are insane, arrogant and stupid at the same time."

X user Cathy Gibbs said of the DOJ filing, "He wants his ballroom/trump city finished so that he can 'bunker down' and hide when authorities come after him. He'll also require his own personal McDonald's and golf course underground, and his grand trophy room."
