Binance founder Changpeng Zhao, known as CZ, addressed his views on FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried (SBF) and the U.S. prison system during a May 6, 2025, interview with FAROKH RADIO.
He stated that while he does not wish a prison experience on anyone, fraudulent behavior must be stopped. CZ also shared observations about long prison sentences, over-punishment, and their effects on reform and taxpayers.

Changpeng Zhao was asked whether he sympathizes with SBF, who received a 25-year prison sentence for massive fraud. He replied, “I do not wish a prison experience on anyone, but fraud and deception must be stopped.”
He added that accountability protects users and the broader crypto ecosystem. CZ said deceptive behavior cannot be ignored, regardless of personal feelings.
CZ explained that separating personal sentiment from legal outcomes is necessary. While he does not wish hardship for anyone, the law must apply fairly.
He also stressed that enforcing accountability helps maintain public trust. CZ said this approach ensures confidence in crypto markets and financial systems.
CZ spoke about the U.S. prison system and sentencing practices. He said, “Excessively long sentences often discourage inmates from reforming themselves.”
He noted that over-punishment increases taxpayer costs without achieving correctional goals. CZ argued that the system should encourage rehabilitation while maintaining accountability.
CZ added that extreme sentences may not prevent future crimes. He said the justice system should balance punishment with opportunities for reform.
He also suggested reviewing sentencing rules to reduce unnecessary social and financial costs. CZ emphasized that fair and reasonable sentences better serve public safety.
During an October 11, 2025, interview with threadguy, CZ discussed Meme coins and crypto culture. He clarified, “I never opposed Meme coins, but I do not trade them.”
He shared that his first attempt to buy a Meme coin in February failed due to an MEV attack. The transaction became widely discussed in the community. CZ added that any tweet he posts could become a Meme, making him cautious about tweeting.
CZ also mentioned Chinese Meme coins such as “Zhao Chang’e,” inspired by his Mid-Autumn Festival tweets. These coins drew attention on the BNB Chain and engaged Solana community members.
He said the Meme culture encouraged curiosity and learning. Many Western users began learning Chinese through Duolingo because of these coins.
CZ said Meme coins play a social and cultural role in blockchain communities. They often encourage creative participation and engagement.
He explained that while he does not trade Meme coins, he acknowledges their influence. CZ described them as connecting different crypto communities.
CZ added that Meme coins can spark curiosity and education among users. They often promote awareness and learning beyond financial transactions.
He concluded that careful observation is important in crypto. CZ supports innovation while encouraging responsible participation and awareness in blockchain communities.
