War marks 'beginning of the end' for Trump presidency: biographer

On Tuesday, April 7, news coverage around the world — from North America to Europe to Asia — was dominated by U.S. President Donald Trump's threat that "a whole civilization will die tonight" if the Iranian government didn't reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway crucial for oil transportation in the Middle East. Trump, however, agreed to a two-week ceasefire with Iran and paused U.S. airstrikes against the country.

Trump biographer Michael Wolff discussed Trump's "whole civilization" threat and the Iran war on an episode of the vodcast "Inside Trump's Head." And he described the war as a political liability that Trump cannot "recover" from.

Wolff told co-host Joanna Coles, "I think this situation is the worst situation he has gotten himself into. I think we can go broader on it: On a tipping point scale, this is very much, very clearly — I think indisputably — the beginning of the end. He's not going to recover from this."

Wolff described Trump as politically toxic, arguing that his supporters and allies will suffer from the Iran war as well.

Wolff told Coles, "I mean, he's going to take everyone around him with him, but if he were to actually do what he's threatening to do to Iran — I'm just trying to think. I don't think this is going to happen, and I may absolutely be proved wrong. It is Donald Trump. You don't know. He is a crazy man…. In business as usual, he would declare victory, but we're over that line. That's not believable anymore."

Wolff continued, "Him declaring victory would immediately make it clear that we have lost and the Iranians had won. The other side of that is that he can become more aggressive, but more aggression only seems to give the Iranians more backbone, more determination to use the leverage they have against us, and actually, the world."

Trump's handling of the Iran war is drawing scathing criticism from many Never Trump conservatives, from MS NOW hosts Joe Scarborough and Nicolle Wallace to Tim Miller and Mona Charen at The Bulwark. But some MAGA Republicans are vehemently critical as well, including Infowars' Alex Jones, former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Georgia) and ex-Fox News host Tucker Carlson.

Trump, according to Wolff, is in way over his head with Iran.
