Vice President Vance campaigns for Hungarian PM Orbán amid turbulent war with Iran

Historian Douglas Brinkley expressed shock that Vice President JD Vance actively campaigned for Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, described as Vladimir Putin's puppet, all the while the U.S. faced potential Iran war escalation.

Brinkley characterized Vance's support for Orbán as "utterly nutty," criticizing the Trump and Vance administration's dismantling of NATO.

Brinkley argued Trump failed to keep NATO engaged and that alliance, central to American foreign policy since Truman, is "starting to wobble, almost crumble."

He also warned the administration is squandering soft power globally, while disrespecting the alliance.

Brinkley emphasized NATO allies cannot trust Trump's commitments because he reverses positions overnight and operates as if unbound by alliance obligations. The criticism highlights the administration's prioritization of authoritarian allies over traditional democratic partnerships.
