MANILA, Philippines – Alex Eala begins her Stuttgart Open quest against a player familiar to Filipino fans.

Eala battles Canada’s Leylah Fernandez in the round of 32 of the WTA 500 tournament in Germany on Monday, April 13 — a clash that features a homegrown talent and a player with Filipino roots.

Born to a Filipino-Canadian mother and an Ecuadorian father, the 23-year-old Fernandez boasts impressive credentials among players under 25, having won five WTA titles and having reached a Grand Slam final.

Fernandez, who currently sits at No. 25 in the WTA rankings, rose to international stardom when she made the final of the 2021 US Open, where she finished runner-up to Great Britain’s Emma Raducanu in a historic match between two teenagers.

It will be the first encounter between Fernandez and Eala, who received a place in the main draw.

Eala, ranked 46th in the world, was supposed to go through the qualifiers but earned a direct entry to the main draw as a replacement for China’s world No. 32 Qinwen Zhang, who pulled out due to an injury.

While the two are cordial off the court, with Fernandez once calling Eala an “amazing person,” they are all about winning on it.

Eala hopes to return to her winning ways after losing in the second round of the Linz Open a week ago to Latvia’s Jelana Ostapenko, the defeat extending her streak of early exits on clay.

Meanwhile, Fernandez seeks to give her 2026 campaign a boost as she has failed to make it past the third round of the first nine tournaments she took part in this year.

Fernandez’s 2026 record stands at 4-9, while Eala totes a 14-8 slate.

The winner between Eala and Fernandez is on a collision course with Italy’s world No. 8 Jasmine Paolini in the second round. – Rappler.com
