GOP strategist loses it on CNN over Republican leaders protecting 'predatory behavior'

A GOP strategist came unglued during a segment on CNN while discussing the recent resignation of two lawmakers accused of sexual assault.

Shermichael Singleton joined CNN's Anderson Cooper on "The Lead" on Monday, where they discussed the recent resignation announcements from Reps. Tony Gonzales (R-TX) and Eric Swalwell (D-CA), both of whom have been accused of sexually assaulting young women who worked for them. Both lawmakers have denied the allegations.

Swalwell announced his intent to resign from Congress on Monday ahead of a vote to expel him. Gonzales's resignation happened shortly after Swalwell's announcement.

Singleton became animated while discussing the resignations and why it took Republicans so long to hold Gonzales accountable, even as Swalwell was ousted from Congress just a week after allegations against him surfaced.

Cooper asked Singleton if the Republicans' thin majority in Congress played into their decision-making.

"Who cares!" Singleton said. "Who cares, respectfully, about the balance of power ... when you have a member amongst your ranks who has clearly violated what I presume should be an ethical and moral principle of conservatives, but hell, any decent person. Who cares if you lose a vote? You shouldn't want people like that amongst your ranks. And to me, as a Christian, do I put my political views above my moral and spiritual ones? Of course not. And my expectation is that our leaders on both sides should not do the same."

"And what I'm worried about, Anderson, is a month from now, two months from now, we will have moved on. We'll be on to the next story," he continued. "But what about the young staff, women who have to carry this shame, this predatory behavior with them for the rest of their lives that they will never get over. They'll never get their justice. They'll never get their due day in court because we buried it. We've moved on. And that's something that Congress continues to perpetuate."
