Key Takeaways:

  • Bitcoin hit $76,120 on April 14, triggering $293 million in liquidations during a risk-on rally.
  • De-escalation hopes sent the S&P 500 to 7,000 while WTI oil fell to $92 amid U.S.-Iran talks.
  • The IMF warns that March’s loss of 10.1 million barrels of oil per day may stall 2026 global growth.

Oil Prices Retreat as Diplomacy Takes Center Stage

Moments after topping $76,000, bitcoin retreated to just under $74,500 as risk-on sentiment swept across markets. The momentum was driven by reports that the United States and Iran plan another round of talks before the two-week cease-fire expires. This came even as the U.S. Navy’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz entered its second day.

According to the daily chart, bitcoin broke past the $74,000 mark late Monday before consolidating above that level for much of the morning session. Around 8 a.m. EST, the cryptocurrency began another rally, peaking at $76,120 by 10:15 a.m. Its market cap briefly rose to $1.52 trillion, the highest since early February.

Bitcoin’s April 14 price action lifted its seven-day gains to 9% and nearly 10% since the start of the month.

Oil markets once again mirrored the battlefield. As has been the case since the war began, every escalation has sent crude prices soaring, and the U.S. blockade of the Strait of Hormuz was no exception. Yet, for the second time this month, traders reversed course as diplomatic signals emerged. Brent crude, which had been hovering near $100 a barrel, slid to just under $95, while West Texas Intermediate fell even further to $92.

The sharp swing pointed to how sensitive energy markets remain to geopolitical headlines. What initially looked like another surge in supply‑side risk quickly gave way to optimism that both Washington and Tehran may be willing to test diplomacy before the cease‑fire deadline.

With oil prices down, equities rallied. The S&P 500 hit the 7,000-point milestone, the Nasdaq rose 1.6%, and the Dow Jones gained 0.55%. In Asia, the Nikkei and Kospi climbed more than 2%, while Germany’s DAX rose 1.27% and France’s CAC gained 1.12%.

Still, analysts at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the International Energy Agency (IEA) warned that the long tail of the conflict—including disrupted fertilizer supplies and the loss of 10.1 million barrels per day of oil production in March—could weigh on global growth later this year.

Meanwhile, bitcoin’s intraday swings triggered nearly $293 million in leveraged liquidations, including $256 million in short positions. Overall, the cryptocurrency market saw about $700 million in leveraged positions wiped out in 24 hours.
