strategies

Online poker feels harder than ever if you are not constantly improving and tweaking your strategy. I’ve seen it in my own game where simple fundamentals can still crust most players, but other things simply don’t get the results anymore.

Which is why I’m going to break down what’s working today so that you can apply it into your own game and hopefully have more winning sessions.

Play Tight-Aggressive (TAG)

The play tight aggressive approach has always worked well at low to mid stake games online because people still tend to make a lot of mistakes in these games. What I mean is anything in the range of 10nl all the way up to around 200nl games are still relatively easy to beat without getting fancy.

All you need to do is focus on starting strong hands in early position and opening a bit wider with hands like 910 suited in late position. You don’t want to play too many hands, but when you have the best of it you want to stay aggressive. Slow playing doesn’t pay the bills, so bet aggressively when you have the edge.

Only Play 1-2 Tables at a Time

It amazes me that so many people still believe multi tabling 6 or more tables at a time can be profitable. It simply doesn’t work that way anymore. The reason is because people have gotten too good, and the only way to do this profitably is by focusing on the games you are playing.

When you really focus on the games you are playing, which for me caps out at 2 at a time you will pick up on all the little details going on in the hand. Did your opponent bet too quickly, or did he run his time bank a little longer. These are all little details that are impossible to pay attention to if you are trying to play 6 plus tables at a time. My advice here is simple. Play less tables and watch you ROI go way up for the time you put into playing period.

Choose the Right Tables

I already hinted at this, but not all games are equal when it comes to playing online poker. Tough regs vs casual players is a huge difference. If you play softer games, you will have a much easier time finding consistency when you play. I’ve had a lot of success playing mid stakes typically anything between 200nl-500nl on most poker sites.

However, I’ve had the most success playing on Ignition because there are a lot of casual players that are in it more for entertainment and probably don’t take the game as seriously as you and I. I put together a simple breakdown of how it works and bonuses on Pokerstacked.

Bluffing Is a Skill

Look, you need to be bluffing a bit more if you plan to win more sessions. I’m not saying you must barrel off with 27 off suit when you miss badly, but you need to mix things up against the people in these games. For example, if I’m bluffing and miss a board against one opponent with a hand like 56s with a straight and flush draw that happens to connect on the turn, I have no issue jamming or at least betting big.

When you bluff every situation will be different, but you need to add it into your game to be successful long term. Once again, I’m not saying you need to go crazy, but if you feel like someone is weak in a specific spot you need to be aggressive and bluff. Playing simple ABC style of poker will only get you so far.

Position Is Everything

Position is one of the most overlooked advantages in online poker, yet it has a massive impact on your results. Simply put, acting later in a hand gives you more information than your opponents, and information is everything in poker.

When you’re in late position—like the cutoff or button—you get to see how other players act before making your decision. If everyone checks, you can take control of the pot with a bet. If someone shows weakness, you can apply pressure. This allows you to play a wider range of hands profitably compared to early position.

On the other hand, playing from early position puts you at a disadvantage. You’re forced to act without knowing what others will do, which means you should stick to stronger hands and avoid marginal spots. Many beginners lose money by playing too loose from these positions.

A simple adjustment like tightening up early and expanding your range late can dramatically improve your win rate. Over time, consistently playing with positional awareness will help you avoid tough situations and capitalize on easier opportunities, which is exactly how winning players separate themselves from the rest.

Final Thoughts

Online poker is still an awesome game, but it’s gotten harder each year. I would argue it might have plateaud and people are playing worse than ever. But that debate is up in the air. What I can tell you is that if you add just two of these tips I’ve given you into your game it will help you out long term.

You should also realize when you sit down and play your up against real people who make mistakes, or have timing tells that give away their strength in a certain spot. If you really pay attention to these little details, it can be the make or break to showing a profit when you wrap up playing on any given day.

And let’s be honest poker is a brutal game, but you can always level up and get better. I truly believe that. With that said keep improving, don’t get emotional, and stay balanced and stick to the fundamentals. The rest will take care of itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the easiest way to improve at online poker?
Focus on the fundamentals first. Playing tight-aggressive, paying attention to position, and avoiding unnecessary bluffs will take you much further than trying to learn advanced strategies too early. Most players lose because they overcomplicate the game instead of mastering the basics.

Do these strategies still work in today’s games?
Yes. While poker has become more competitive, the majority of players—especially at low to mid stakes—still make basic mistakes. Simple, disciplined strategies continue to be highly effective, particularly when applied consistently.

How important is table selection?
Table selection is one of the biggest edges in online poker. Playing against weaker, more recreational players can significantly increase your win rate. Choosing the right environment is often more important than making perfect decisions in tough games.

How much money do I need to start playing online poker?
You can start with a small bankroll, but proper bankroll management is key. A common guideline is to have at least 20–50 buy-ins for the stakes you’re playing to handle variance and avoid going broke. Personally, I think 20 buy ins is the sweet spot.

Is online poker still profitable for beginners?
Yes, but it depends on your approach. Players who stay disciplined, continue learning, and focus on softer games still have a strong chance to be profitable over time. You have to have a long-term outlook on playing poker to get good results from it. Short term variance will always be there, just keep your emotions in check and don’t tilt when things don’t go your way.
