Tesla CEO Elon Musk posted on X Wednesday morning confirming that Tesla’s AI chip design team has completed the tape-out of its AI5 chip. A tape-out marks the end of the design phase, meaning the chip blueprint is finalized and sent to manufacturing partners.
Musk thanked both Samsung Electronics (SSNLF) and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSM) for their roles in bringing the chip to production.
TSLA stock was up 0.66% in premarket trading to $366.60 following the post.

The AI5 chip is built to power Tesla’s next generation of self-driving systems. Musk has previously said the chip could become one of the most widely produced AI chips ever made.
AI5 is slated to enter high-volume production in 2027. At that point, it is expected to replace the AI4 hardware currently installed in Tesla vehicles.
Tesla signed a $16.5 billion deal with Samsung Electronics last year to manufacture A16 chips on U.S. soil. That partnership is part of the infrastructure behind Tesla’s chip ambitions.
Musk didn’t stop at AI5. In the same post, he confirmed that work on AI6 is already underway, with a potential tape-out as early as December 2026.
Dojo 3, the next iteration of Tesla’s in-house supercomputer used to train its self-driving AI models, is also in development. Dojo is central to Tesla’s ability to process the vast amounts of real-world driving data it collects.
Together, AI6 and Dojo 3 represent the next layer of Tesla’s in-house AI build-out.
By designing its own chips, Tesla reduces its dependence on third-party AI hardware suppliers. It also gains tighter control over performance timelines and costs as autonomous driving development accelerates.
Wall Street remains split on the stock. Of 30 analysts tracked, 13 rate TSLA a Buy, 11 a Hold, and 6 a Sell — landing on a Hold consensus.
The average price target sits at $402.29, implying roughly 10.46% upside from current levels.
The AI5 tape-out confirmation is the most recent hard milestone Tesla has publicly shared on its in-house chip roadmap, with AI5 mass production now firmly on track for 2027.
