Trump's $10 billion lawsuit against the IRS may get settled without trial

President Donald Trump and his sons are negotiating with the Internal Revenue Service to settle a $10 billion lawsuit without trial, according to a motion filed Friday with IRS consent.

Trump filed the lawsuit after taking office, claiming an IRS contractor leaked his tax information. Unlike most modern presidents, Trump has repeatedly refused to release his tax returns publicly.

The motion stated the case remains in early stages and requested an extension to allow parties to engage in settlement discussions and avoid protracted litigation.

Democratic Sens. Ron Wyden and Elizabeth Warren have accused Trump of attempting to "steal" money from the Treasury, arguing Congress designed the relevant provision to compensate for proven harm, not provide windfalls to presidents seeking personal gain.

Trump acknowledged in January that he is essentially negotiating with himself, stating he could make the settlement "a substantial amount" before directing funds to charities.
