Kash Patel's lawsuit against The Atlantic and its staff writer could backfire

FBI Director Kash Patel filed a $250 million defamation lawsuit Monday against The Atlantic and staff writer Sarah Fitzpatrick over an article alleging excessive drinking and erratic behavior.

The complaint claims the article contains "false and obviously fabricated allegations designed to destroy Director Patel's reputation and drive him from office."

The Atlantic's report cited more than two dozen sources, including current and former FBI officials, who alleged Patel has rescheduled meetings to recover from intoxication and has been unreachable when needed.

Critics argue the lawsuit may backfire by potentially triggering discovery proceedings that could verify the article's claims. On Blueky, journalist Mona Burns noted the lawsuit confirms Patel was locked out of the FBI system on April 10, sparking speculation about his employment status.

Multiple observers warned that legal discovery could expose evidence supporting the allegations, with Democratic Rep. Ted Lieu sarcastically commenting on the resulting depositions via X.
