New strategy to stop Trump’s 'humiliating' debacle taking shape in Congress

President Donald Trump's war of choice against Iran is "humiliating" the U.S. "on a daily basis," and according to lawmakers who spoke to The Hill, a new strategy is taking hold to more aggressively try to force it to an end.

"Since the strikes began on Feb. 28, the lower chamber has voted only twice on war power resolutions, which would require President Trump to terminate the military campaign against Tehran unless Congress explicitly approves it," The Hill explained in a report published Friday morning. "That pace is about to change dramatically."

According to the report, Democratic Rep. Josh Gottheimer is "weighing" a plan to force another war powers vote "as soon as next week." He is not alone in hashing out such a plan, leading to a situation in which Congress is confronted with more and more votes on the matter back to back to back.

"[A] handful of liberal Democrats are poised to follow suit, introducing similar but separate resolutions this week that they intend to bring to the floor in rapid-fire succession in May and beyond," the report explained.

The Hill continued: "Whether they have enough GOP support to pass any of the measures remains uncertain after the first two attempts failed. But short of passage, the Democrats’ aim is to force a series of lengthy floor debates on the Iran conflict, which is unpopular with voters nationally, and to put Republican lawmakers on the record when it comes to asserting Congress’s authority to declare war."

Rep. Ro Khanna, a California Democrat, put forward his own war powers resolution on Tuesday, followed by a second identical resolution from Rep. Jared Huffman, another California Democrat, on Wednesday. Rep. Pramila Jayapal, a Washington Democrat, added to the pile with her own resolution on Thursday. After the resolutions "ripen" following a 15-day period, they will be forced to the floor for a vote. The Hill explained that this plan would bring the House in-line with the Senate, which has already voted five times on war powers resolutions.

"We want a number of these, with the Progressive Caucus, so that we can call for a vote over and over,” Khanna explained. "

“This is one of the few ways that we can force some debate and accountability,” Huffman told the outlet. "This should not be a one-and-done. The war is ongoing. Trump has no way out. He’s humiliating us on a daily basis on the world stage, putting us at great risk, so we’ve got to keep this going. That’s why we have to keep putting them in the queue, so that they ripen periodically."
