OpenAI launches workspace agents for ChatGPT, automating workflows for businesses. Available in research preview across select plans until May 6, 2026.

OpenAI has unveiled workspace agents within ChatGPT, designed to automate complex workflows and streamline team operations across organizational tools. Powered by OpenAI’s Codex model, these agents are available in research preview for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Teachers plans, with free access until May 6, 2026, before transitioning to credit-based pricing.

The workspace agents represent the next step in GPT development, expanding functionality beyond individual productivity. These agents can perform tasks such as writing code, preparing reports, managing sales pipelines, and responding to messages, all while adhering to organizational permissions and controls. By running in the cloud, they continue operating even when team members are offline.

How Workspace Agents Work

These agents are tailored for team-based workflows that require shared context and collaboration. For instance, OpenAI’s sales team uses an agent to compile call notes, qualify leads, and draft follow-up emails, significantly reducing time spent on manual tasks. Other use cases include product feedback routing, weekly metrics reporting, and third-party risk management. Teams can quickly build agents using templates for finance, sales, and marketing workflows or customize them to fit specific needs.

To start, users can access the “Agents” feature in the ChatGPT sidebar, describe their desired workflow, and let ChatGPT guide them in creating a functional agent. The platform supports integration with tools like Slack, allowing agents to respond to team queries, link documentation, and escalate unresolved issues.

Enterprise-Grade Controls

Designed with enterprise governance in mind, workspace agents provide IT admins with monitoring and control capabilities. Admins can restrict tool access, enforce approval requirements for sensitive actions, and monitor agent activity through analytics. The forthcoming Compliance API will enhance visibility into agent configurations, updates, and usage patterns, with the option to suspend agents if necessary.

Additionally, safeguards are in place to protect against prompt injection attacks and other risks, ensuring agents remain aligned with user instructions.

Early Adoption Feedback

Early adopters, such as Rippling, have reported significant efficiency gains. Ankur Bhatt, AI Engineering at Rippling, shared that a sales opportunity agent has reduced weekly workload by automating tasks like account research and deal briefs, enabling sales consultants to focus on higher-value activities.

Availability and Future Developments

Workspace agents are currently in research preview and free to use until May 6, 2026. OpenAI plans to introduce additional features, including triggers for automatic task initiation, enhanced performance dashboards, and expanded integration capabilities.

This launch marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of AI tools, as workspace agents aim to reduce manual effort and improve team efficiency. Businesses interested in testing the feature can explore it through the ChatGPT platform or contact OpenAI’s sales team for further information.
