An even sadder news followed the Cignal Super Spikers’ heartbreaking runner-up finish in the Premier Volleyball League.

Cignal announced on Tuesday, April 28, that it was taking a leave of absence from the PVL just less than a week after it fell short of a breakthrough championship.

“This difficult decision was taken after careful review of Cignal’s strategic direction,” the Super Spikers said in a statement.

“Our deepest thanks go out to the players, coaches, and staff who have poured their hearts into this team over the years.”

Cignal reached the finals of the season-opening All-Filipino Conference, but missed out on its first-ever PVL title as the Creamline Cool Smashers completed a sweep of the best-of-three series last April 23.

Joining the league in 2021, the Super Spikers are ending their PVL run with two runner-up and five third-place finishes.

Cignal became the third team to take a leave of absence from the PVL over the last five months after the Chery Tiggo Crossovers and the Petro Gazz Angels.

Petro Gazz and Chery Tiggo bid the PVL goodbye just before the start of the 2026 season.

Their players were absorbed by other PVL squads.

The same is expected to happen for Super Spikers, with the rest of the PVL seeking to get their hands on several talented Cignal players bannered by award winners Vanie Gandler, Erika Santos, Gel Cayuna, and Jackie Acuña.

Gandler and Santos both won MVP, Cayuna is a five-time Best Setter, while Acuña earned Best Middle Blocker honors once. Rappler.com
