Earlier today, in an announcement, Twitter released its support of Twitter Tips through the Lightning Network. Furthermore, this feature will allow you to directly integrate a third-party non-custodial wallet with your Twitter account and send/ receive tips. First, let’s understand Twitter tips in a bit more detail, and then we’ll move towards the steps to send/ receive BTC over Twitter.

What is Twitter Tips?

Twitter is a social giant, and the company always seems to go the extra mile to provide its users with the best service possible. Twitter Tips, a solution to global bitcoin payments through the Lightning network that’ll allow you to send funds globally.

Twitter has collaborated with Strike API (enabling Bitcoin + Lightning Network) that allows you to send/ receive Bitcoin using the Strike App easily. However, as of now, this service is only available to iOS users around the globe and will soon expand to all users throughout the world.

Why is Twitter the first client of Strike API?

The Strike API enable marketplaces and business to integrate bitcoin payments using API keys. You might wonder that transferring bitcoin would have very high fees, but that’s not the case with Strike API.

Strike brings together the Bitcoin and the Lightning Network for faster and cheaper payments. Twitter made global communication faster, more affordable, and more accessible, and now the Strike API aims to do the same with international payments.

How to set up your Twitter profile to send/ receive tips?

• Log into your Twitter account and head over to edit your profile.
• Now, tap on Tips (which is turned off by default).
• Thereafter you’ll have to agree to Twitter’s General Tipping Policy to move ahead.
• Now you’ll be redirected to Twitter’s tips setting screen.
• Here, toggle the tips button and choose the third-party services you’d like to enable.
• You’ll see a Bitcoin Lightning Network section; here, enter the username of the service you chose.
• And once done, you can send/ receive payments over Twitter.

How to send Tips on Twitter in BTC?

• Download and create an account on the Strike app and deposit bitcoin in there.

(You can get the strike app of iOS, Android, and as Browser extension)

• Now head over to Twitter and open the profile of the person you wish to tip.
• Click on the tiny money icon on their profile.
• Next, choose the amount of money you wish to tip.
• Click on next and add a quote if you want to, such as “Bitcoin to the Moon!”
• Thereafter click on the open wallet.
• You will be directed to your non-custodial wallet.
• Confirm the payment, and zoom! The funds are transferred.

How does the whole thing work?

Twitter has partnered with Strike payments gateway, which recently launched a new feature called the Strike API. Twitter uses Strike API to connect your Twitter handle with the Strike app, and then you’re able to send payments directly through your strike account.

However, as of September 24, 2021 strike app is only available in the United States of America and El Salvador (we will be soon observing the expansion of this service.)
