TLDR

  • Google is exploring investments in AI infrastructure and the manufacturing of servers and drones in India, according to India’s IT minister.
  • In October 2025, Google announced a $15 billion, five-year investment plan in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
  • Last month, Google broke ground on its India AI Hub in Visakhapatnam, partnering with AdaniConneX and Nxtra by Airtel.
  • The project includes India’s first gigawatt-scale AI hub, spanning three data center campuses across 600 acres of allocated land.
  • India’s minister urged Google to manufacture servers, GPUs, and chips locally as part of the country’s growing electronics push.

Google is extending its footprint in India beyond data centers. According to Ashwini Vaishnaw, India’s Union Minister for Electronics and IT, the company is now exploring investments in AI infrastructure and the manufacturing of servers and drones inside the country.

The announcement builds on a commitment Google made in October 2025 — a $15 billion investment over five years to build a data center and AI hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. At the time, Google described it as its largest-ever commitment in India.

On April 28, Google formally broke ground on the project, in partnership with AdaniConneX and Nxtra by Airtel. The company called it part of its “largest investment in India’s digital future to date.”

What the Visakhapatnam Project Involves

The project is structured around India’s first gigawatt-scale AI hub — three data center campuses with a combined 1 GW hyperscale capacity. The Andhra Pradesh government has set aside around 600 acres of land across the Turluvada, Rambilli, and Adavivaram areas for the build-out.

At the groundbreaking ceremony, Vaishnaw described Visakhapatnam’s potential as an “AI Patnam” — or AI City — driven by global investment and digital infrastructure.

India Pushes for Local Manufacturing

The minister’s latest comments go further than just data centers. Vaishnaw specifically called on Google to manufacture servers, GPUs, and chips within India — a push that aligns with the country’s broader electronics manufacturing goals.

The drone manufacturing angle is newer and hasn’t been detailed publicly. No timeline or investment figure has been attached to it yet.

Google has not confirmed any specifics around the expanded manufacturing plans beyond what the minister shared.

The groundbreaking in Visakhapatnam took place on April 28, 2026, with the $15 billion data center project still in early construction phases.
