FC Barcelona Coach Flick Extends Contract Through 2028

FC Barcelona sealed a major coup on Monday when head coach Hansi Flick signed a contract extension until June 30, 2028, as announced by the club.

“FC Barcelona and Hansi Flick have reached an agreement to extend his contract, tying him to the Club until 30 June 2028 with the option for an additional season,” a statement on the matter began.

“The German signed his new contract on Monday at the Club’s offices with FC Barcelona president Rafa Yuste, director of the Football Area, Anderson Luis de Souza ‘Deco’, and other members of the sporting commission all present. Also present was president elect Joan Laporta,” the correspondence continued, before revealing Flick’s delight over “the confidence the club has shown in him”.

The German wants to “win more trophies”, with the stability of the sporting project at the Spotify Camp Nou helping convince him to extend to what could be an overall four year-stay.

“We will give everything next season to fulfil the dreams we have,” Flick further vowed.

That of course is winning the Champions League crown that has continued to elude the Catalans since 2015.

Flick looked close to delivering it in his maiden term, where Inter Milan delivered a cruel KO in the semifinals at the San Siro.

In his latest attempt, Barca fell even shorter in the quarterfinals to Spanish foes Atletico Madrid.

Yet while the UCL is the Holy Grail, Flick has ushered in an undisputed era of domestic dominance.

In 2024, when Barca finished the season trophyless but Real Madrid were La Liga and European champions, their bitter rivals predicted obliteration amid the free transfer signing of Kylian Mbappe.

Fast forward to the present, however, and it is Madrid yet to taste silverware in the Frenchman’s tenure while Flick has won five out of six domestic trophies on offer.

Ultimately, however, while he has brought joy back to the Catalan capital, Flick could be judged by how he fairs on the continent.

With Cruyffista Joan Laporta’s full faith in him, however, Flick’s defensive highline, high-scoring approach should at least mean that Culers have fun amid possible further heartbreak or eternal glory.
