As Alabama braces for another season of sweltering heat and rising utility costs, a new guidance report from Engle Services LLC highlights how modern HVAC technology can help homeowners cut expenses and improve comfort. The report, released by the Birmingham-based family-owned contractor, emphasizes the benefits of smart thermostats, heat pump installations, and proactive diagnostics.

Smart thermostats, when paired with new A/C installations, allow homeowners to control temperatures remotely, schedule usage, and monitor energy consumption. According to the report, these devices can reduce annual heating and cooling energy use by up to 23 percent. In Alabama, where summer temperatures routinely exceed 90 degrees Fahrenheit, this efficiency translates into tangible savings on monthly bills. Additionally, the combination of a properly sized system and a connected thermostat reduces equipment strain, potentially extending the system’s lifespan by several years.

Heat pump technology is particularly suited for Central Alabama’s climate, which features hot, humid summers and mild winters. Unlike traditional systems that generate heat, heat pumps transfer heat, achieving efficiency gains of 200 to 300 percent compared to electric resistance heating. Modern models also provide efficient cooling, serving as a complete HVAC solution. James Engle, owner of Engle Services, noted that the company installed over 150 heat pump systems for Birmingham-area homeowners last year, with customers reporting lower bills and improved comfort, especially during spring and fall.

Connected HVAC systems also enable smart diagnostics, which can detect irregularities in runtime, temperature differentials, and energy consumption. By identifying minor issues early, homeowners can reduce A/C repair costs by 30 to 40 percent compared to repairs after a full system failure. This proactive approach is now a core part of the service model recommended by Engle Services.

Before upgrading, homeowners should consider system sizing, duct condition, and SEER2 ratings. An oversized or undersized unit can lead to inefficiency and increased wear. Duct leaks can undermine even the most efficient system, so a duct inspection is advisable. Engle Services recommends a Manual J load calculation to ensure the system matches the home’s thermal characteristics. Systems with SEER2 ratings of 16 or higher are considered efficient for Alabama’s climate and may qualify for federal tax credits under current energy efficiency programs.
