MANILA, Philippines – Former Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte will spend another year in detention after the International Criminal Court (ICC) Trial Chamber III said he is still not qualified to avail himself of temporary liberty.
“The chamber hereby decides that the accused shall continue to be detained,” said the eight-page decision by the trial chamber on Friday, May 22.
At the ICC, the chambers conduct a yearly review to check if detention is still warranted for an accused. Specifically, the judges will check for changed circumstances that would warrant temporary liberty for detained suspects.
“The Chamber therefore finds no notable change in circumstances [of Duterte] that warrants the release of the accused, with or without conditions,” the chamber said.
