The Air Tanzania Mozambique corridor is set to deepen as the Tanzanian national carrier prepares to launch multi-city services into Mozambique under a new bilateral air services agreement.

Air Tanzania‘s planned entry into Mozambique marks a significant step in tightening regional integration between the two Indian Ocean neighbours. The carrier is positioning itself to capture trade, tourism and business traffic across a market where demand for reliable connectivity is rebuilding.

New routes, wider network ambitions

Air Tanzania plans to begin operations to Mozambique as part of the implementation of a bilateral agreement between the Mozambican and Tanzanian governments. The airline has indicated an ambition to support the mobility of citizens across its broader network, signalling an intent that goes beyond simple point-to-point links.

In its initial phase, the airline plans to operate flights to the cities of Maputo, Beira, Nampula, Pemba and Nacala, according to statements reported in Mozambican media about the new bilateral air services agreement between Mozambique and Tanzania. These cities link Mozambique’s political capital, key coastal economic hubs and northern growth centres. Together they create a spine that connects into Dar es Salaam and onward regional destinations. The move should strengthen air links between the two countries and support trade, tourism and business flows.

For investors, the strategy positions Air Tanzania to tap into passenger and cargo demand tied to Mozambique’s energy projects, agribusiness exports and coastal tourism. It also gives Mozambican businesses and workers better access to East African markets, where Dar es Salaam serves as a logistics and services gateway. Although launch timelines and schedules have not yet been publicly set, the network design suggests a clear focus on business-relevant cities rather than purely leisure points.

The planned expansion comes as LAM Mozambique Airlines continues to face operational and financial pressures, including grounded aircraft and route adjustments. In this context, new entry by Air Tanzania could partially ease capacity constraints on some routes and offer corporates more redundancy in their travel planning.

Border demarcation signals deeper corridor integration

The aviation push sits alongside a broader effort by Mozambique and Tanzania to formalise their shared border and deepen cooperation along the corridor. The two governments have approved a shared border demarcation project valued at around US$400,000, with costs to be split equally between them and work scheduled to start in the next phase of implementation.

According to Armando Chavana, Director of Borders at Mozambique’s National Institute of the Sea and Borders, the joint project with Tanzania will start in the next phase and includes defining the land boundary with new intermediate markers to make it clearer. According to Mozambique’s National Institute of the Sea and Borders, the project also covers the redefinition of around 320 kilometres of river border along the Rovuma River. This river forms a key part of the dividing line between the two Southern African Development Community members. Chavana stated in an interview reported by regional media that each country will shoulder half of the costs and resources, including technicians, vehicles and logistics.

This combination of new air links and more precise border demarcation sends a clear signal of normalising and strengthening cross-border operations. Better defined borders tend to reduce transaction costs for cross-border projects and trade. At the same time, improved air connectivity can shorten travel times for investors, officials and technical teams involved in energy, infrastructure and security cooperation along the Rovuma basin.

For development finance institutions and corporate investors, the alignment of aviation expansion with institutional cooperation creates a more coherent corridor story. It suggests both governments are prepared to invest in enabling infrastructure and governance frameworks, rather than focusing on isolated projects.

As Air Tanzania Mozambique services move from plan to operation, investors should watch three indicators: the final route and frequency choices, any code-share or interline arrangements with regional partners, and progress on the border demarcation milestones along the Rovuma River. Together, these will shape how far the corridor can support larger trade, tourism and capital flows between East and Southern Africa.
