MANILA, Philippines – Several foreign governments expressed their sympathies to Filipinos affected by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake off the coast of Sarangani on Monday, June 8.
The earthquake – which was felt across Mindanao – has so far killed at least 19 people and injured around 130 more. Several buildings and key infrastructure were also badly damaged by the tremor.
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi expressed her heartfelt condolences to bereaved families and those affected. She also said that Japan is ready to provide any possible assistance that the Philippines may need.
David Hartman, Canada’s ambassador to the Philippines, also said Ottawa is ready to provide assistance to affected communities.
The United States embassy in Manila said it is closely monitoring the situation along with local authorities and stands ready to support government relief efforts.
The ambassadors of Australia, the United Kingdom, and the European Union also offered messages of solidarity with those affected.
The embassies of France, China, New Zealand, and the Czech Republic also expressed their sympathies to affected communities.
