As summer temperatures rise, protecting skin from sun damage involves more than just sunscreen and shade. Emerging research suggests that diet, particularly the consumption of grapes, may play a crucial role in supporting skin health at the genetic level. A study published in ACS Nutrition Science found that consuming grapes changed gene expression in human skin, helping support biological processes associated with healthier, more resilient skin.

John Pezzuto, dean and professor of pharmaceutics at the Western New England University College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, said the findings add to evidence that grapes act as a ‘nutrigenomic’ food, meaning compounds like antioxidants and polyphenols in grapes may influence how genes behave. ‘We are now certain that grapes are a superfood and mediate a nutrigenomic response in humans,’ Pezzuto said. ‘The changes in gene expression indicated improvements in skin health.’

Along with incorporating grapes into the diet, experts recommend a multi-pronged approach to skin health. After sun exposure, it’s important to rinse off sweat and chlorine with a gentle cleanser and apply a lightweight moisturizer to replenish the skin and support its natural barrier. Regularly moisturizing, especially after showering, helps lock in hydration.

Consuming skin-friendly foods and beverages also matters. Foods rich in antioxidants and polyphenols, such as California grapes, may support skin health from the inside out. With high water content, grapes also help maintain hydration during warmer months. For a refreshing option, try a California Grape Rosemary Spritzer, which combines sparkling water, grapes, and rosemary.

Often overlooked, lips and eyes are especially vulnerable to sun damage. Using a lip balm with SPF protection and wearing sunglasses with UV protection can shield these delicate areas from harsh rays. Finally, regular skin checks and visits to a dermatologist can help catch potential concerns early, supporting long-term skin health.
