A 13-storey block at Highland Towers collapsed on Dec 11, 1993, reportedly because of soil erosion caused by rain and a burst diversion pipe, killing 48 people. Two other blocks were later abandoned.
PETALING JAYA: The long-abandoned Highland Towers in Hulu Klang will be demolished before the end of the year after a magistrates’ court approved an application by the Ampang Jaya municipal council (MPAJ) last week.
MPAJ deputy president Hasrolnizam Shaari said the court’s decision allows the structure, which has remained abandoned for more than three decades, to be demolished.
Hasrolnizam said the council would hold a meeting with the unit owners, represented by the developer and the insolvency department.
“We do not expect the process to take long as all parties are clear that this is the agreed objective.
“The demolition process will take place within this year,” he was quoted by Harian Metro as saying.
He said MPAJ was preparing for the demolition, including appointing the parties responsible for carrying out the work.
