PETALING JAYA: A road in Duyong, Melaka, caved in today after underground fibre optic drilling by a telecommunications contractor ruptured a major water pipe.
The Melaka Tengah public works department (JKR) said the incident was reported at 9am near the Bukit Bayan traffic lights along Jalan Semabok-Bukit Katil Seksyen 9.
It said a 600mm water pipe belonging to Syarikat Air Melaka Bhd burst during the drilling works carried out by TT dotCom Sdn Bhd.
As a result, JKR said that two lanes from Bukit Katil to Semabok would be closed until further notice.
Pipe repairs are expected to be completed by 6pm, to be followed by road resurfacing works.
“All road users are advised to be cautious and adhere to the safety signs and alternative routes provided. All inconveniences are deeply regretted,” the department said.
