  • XRP Ledger version 3.2.0 went live June 15, renaming core software from rippled to xrpld
  • New xrpld name better reflects the ledger’s wider ecosystem beyond Ripple association
  • All validators and node operators must update infrastructure ahead of mainnet migration

The XRP Ledger has officially launched its most important technical change in years.

This is a comprehensive upgrade to the software which improves infrastructure performance and also brings a significant rebranding to the global blockchain.

Upgrade’s Priority

The version prioritises stability and security above new features, aside from the redesign.

The fixCleanup3_2_0 amendment, which combines a number of authorised security-related enhancements, is introduced in this edition.

Through this cleanup, more than 30 earlier amendments are being retired, lowering protocol debt that has built up over years of network expansion.

Potential security breach risks are addressed by the fixCleanup3_2_0 amendment, and efficiency is improved by new invariant checks and customisable nuDB block sizes.

Security is further improved by gRPC servers’ optional TLS capabilities.

Additionally, there are tools for developers and infrastructure providers, including a capability that enables apps to easily access server definitions and XRP Ledger protocol details without requiring a live server to run.

Overall, this shift keeps the XRP network’s scaling highway at a high-speed advantage over other layer-one networks.

However, node operators must act quickly to maintain network consensus during this transition.

All network validators must update their infrastructure ahead of the final mainnet migration deadline.

Why the Core XRP Software Renamed to xrpld

The software update is not only expected to bring in a new performance boost, but also a historic nomenclature shift in the blockchain.

The core server software officially drops its legacy moniker, moving away from the traditional “rippled” title.

Instead, the network adopts the name “xrpld,” which stands for the official XRPL Daemon.

This “Reinvented” renaming is a calculation and is better aligned with the growing ecosystem and its trajectory away from Ripple Labs.

In addition, the community asked for better demarcated boundaries to highlight real decentralized governance.

The brand new title brings the primary software client into today’s open-source development standards.

The rebranding is therefore a clear focus towards absolute community driven development.

The developers think this new brand will attract more independent developers to the ledger.

Consequently, the ecosystem is placed at the doorsteps of a new era of neutral and decentralized innovation.

Technical Milestones for the XRP Ledger

To migrate an enterprise grade blockchain, cooperation across the global network of participants is essential.

Fortunately, the high adoption rate of the previous version suggests minimal friction during this deployment phase.

The rest of the nodes should finish in a matter of days, says the development team.

Meanwhile, engineers are continuing to test more throughput improvements based on this new codebase.

The xrpld architecture offers a clearer structure to implement future amendment votes.

This means the network will be able to deliver important security fixes much faster than before.

Overall, version 3.2.0 brings numerous performance enhancements and symbolic changes.

The network is able to overcome legacy limitations and ready to move towards institutional tokenisation at scale.

Global operators now hold the tools to power the next generation of decentralized finance.
