Trump cancels his own bill signing in shock move: 'A national emergency'

The House gave final passage to a housing affordability bill on Tuesday, but on Wednesday, President Donald Trump said he would be cancelling the bill’s signing ceremony until lawmakers pass his controversial voter ID bill known as the SAVE Act.

“Today’s Housing News Conference and Signing is hereby cancelled until such time as we pass the desperately needed SAVE AMERICA ACT, which I consider to be a National Emergency,” Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social. “Thank you for your attention to this matter!”

Moments earlier, Trump had raged against “bad Republicans” for failing to eliminate the filibuster – a Senate rule that allows lawmakers to block a bill short of 60 votes – to pass the SAVE Act, which critics have described as a form of “voter suppression.” He also dismissed the housing affordability bill as being of “minor importance” when compared to the SAVE Act.

Trump was expected to host a signing ceremony for the housing affordability bill Wednesday at the Capitol. The bill would "ban companies with investment control of 350 or more single-family homes from purchasing additional units," among other measures designed to reduce housing costs, the Washington Times reported.
