Federal judge orders Musk deposition in voter data lawsuit
U.S. Magistrate Judge Susan Hightower in Austin ordered Elon Musk to sit for a deposition in a fraud lawsuit brought by two Arizona women who claim his political action committee, America PAC, deceived them into surrendering personal information.
Musk promised at an October 2024 Pennsylvania town hall, America PAC would award $1 million daily to a randomly selected registered voter who signed a petition supporting the First and Second Amendments. However, America PAC director Christopher Young admitted in a February deposition that winners were handpicked to serve as "spokespeople" for the PAC, according to Austin American-Statesman for Yahoo News.
They were not randomly selected.
Plaintiffs Jacqueline McAferty and Joy Harvick say they would not have signed had they known the drawing was rigged.
The lawsuit seeks to represent over one million Americans who signed the petition, according to Newsweek.
At a $47 data valuation per person, potential exposure exceeds $47 million. Hightower also ordered Musk to provide unredacted internal documents.
