PETALING JAYA: The Election Commission (EC) has confirmed that a total of 172 candidates are contesting in the 15th Johor state election.
In a statement, EC chairman Ramlan Harun confirmed that Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan are contesting all 56 seats that are up for grabs.
Meanwhile, Perikatan Nasional has fielded 33 candidates, followed by Parti Bersama Malaysia (15), Muda (four), and Parti Sosialis Malaysia and Parti Orang Asli Malaysia, with one candidate each.
A total of six independent candidates are contesting in the polls, while the full list comprises 34 women and 138 men.
There will be 27 three-cornered clashes, 12 four-cornered fights, and 14 straight contests.
There will only be three five-cornered fights.
The oldest candidate is 73 while the youngest is 23.
A total of 2.73 million people are eligible to vote. Early voting will be held on July 7 while polling day is on July 11.
