PAGOH, June 27 — Barisan Nasional (BN) has kicked off its campaign for the 16th Johor state election with high confidence in its bid to wrest back the Bukit Kepong seat from Perikatan Nasional (PN).

BN candidate Ahmad Syar’e Yusof said the party’s confidence is fuelled by its robust divisional-level machinery, which has been steadily built over the past three years, alongside solid backing from both leadership and grassroots members.

“UMNO Pagoh and BN are in the best possible shape right now, and insya-Allah, we will carry this momentum all the way to polling day,” he told reporters after the nomination process at the Kompleks Sukan Pagoh nomination centre here today.

On facing the incumbent from Bersatu, Ahmad Syar’e said he feels no pressure; instead, he wants voters to judge for themselves the incumbent’s track record over the past two terms.

“After being given the trust and opportunity by the people of Bukit Kepong for two terms, let’s take a close look at what they have actually delivered for the people,” he said.

The former teacher also claimed that several development proposals, including housing projects that had been planned earlier, were not pursued, an issue he intends to highlight throughout the campaign period.

In this state poll, Ahmad Syar’e will face a three-cornered contest against incumbent Datuk Dr Shahruddin Jamal from PN, who is also the 17th Johor menteri besar, and C. Subramani from PH.

Bukit Kepong, which falls under the Pagoh parliamentary constituency, has 37,683 eligible voters for this state election.

The Johor state election will take place on July 11, with early voting on July 7.
