Pritam Singh re-elected Workers’ Party chief, survives confidence vote

PETALING JAYA: Pritam Singh, head of Singapore’s main opposition party, survived a secret vote on his leadership and was re-elected unopposed as Workers’ Party leader at a special party conference today.
Aljunied GRC MP Sylvia Lim remained as party chair, with 12 members elected into the central executive committee, the Straits Times reported.
Pritam’s re-election came after he gave an account of a court case in which he was found guilty and fined in February last year of giving false testimony to a parliamentary committee in 2021 regarding a fellow party member who had admitted to lying in parliament about accompanying a sexual assault victim to file a police report.
Pritam’s appeal was dismissed in December.
According to Aljunied GRC MP Gerald Giam, who chaired the party meeting today, “a super-majority voted for him to remain as the secretary-general”. He said the vote reflected the party’s commitment to the democratic process and due process given to Pritam.
