PETALING JAYA: Johor Barisan Nasional chairman Onn Hafiz Ghazi says the opposition’s attempts to use Endau candidate Alwiyah Talib’s party-hopping history against her have failed to dent her standing among grassroots supporters.
He said Alwiyah, better known as “Kak Awi”, continues to enjoy strong local support due to her strong track record of serving the community, Utusan Malaysia reported.
“As we can see today, we are grateful for the Rumah Bangsa initiative introduced by the Umno president (Ahmad Zahid Hamidi). Similarly, at the grassroots level, Alwiyah has been accepted back into the BN fold.
“We all know Alwiyah is a good leader. Even when she was in the opposition, she continued working for the people.
“Thank God we have accepted her back into BN,” Onn Hafiz said.
Alwiyah won the seat on a BN ticket in 2018 before joining Bersatu and retaining it with a 3,041-vote majority on a Perikatan Nasional ticket in the 2022 state polls.
She returned to Umno earlier this month.
Endau, which has 28,767 registered voters, will see a four-cornered contest among Alwiyah, Saiful Nizam Samat (PH), Hasnul Hakimi Hussien (PN),and Jati Awang (Asli).
Polling for the state election will take place on July 11, with early voting set for July 7.
