MANILA, Philippines – The Senate committee on women, children, family relations and gender equality opens an investigation into the fatal school shooting in Tacloban City on Wednesday, July 1.
Two minors, aged 14 and 15, carried out the shooting at the San Jose National High School on June 22, leaving three students dead and 20 others injured.
Part of the hearing is looking into online grooming and radicalization of Filipino children toward acts of violence.
Initial police investigation showed that one of the minors involved in the school shooting, a 14-year-old student, played Gorebox prior to the incident. The Germany-based developer of the video game has declined the committee’s invitation to the hearing.
In a Facebook post on Tuesday, June 30, Senator Risa Hontiveros, the panel chairperson, said she invited a broad range of stakeholders to Wednesday’s hearing, including the parents of the victims, relatives of the minors tagged in the shooting, various government agencies, police, telecommunications providers, and the Game Developers Association of the Philippines.
