PETALING JAYA: National men’s singles shuttler Lee Zii Jia advanced to the second round of the Canada Open after his Indian opponent, Srikanth Kidambi, retired midway through their first-round match.

Zii Jia, ranked world No 60, was leading 11-10 at the break when Srikanth, ranked 27 places higher than the Malaysian, walked up to the umpire to confirm his withdrawal.

It is not known whether he was injured, as no details were provided.

At the US Open last week, Zii Jia, the Paris Olympic bronze medallist, went down 14-21, 13-21 in 30 minutes to the same opponent.

The head-to-head record between the two players now stands at 7-3 in Zii Jia’s favour.

In the round of 16 tomorrow, Zii Jia will meet Canada’s Josh Nguyen or Taiwanese shuttler Liao Jhuo Fu.

Another Malaysian men’s singles player, Cheam June Wei, will play his opening match later tonight.
