Aging reveals itself in the quietest of moments. We catch our parents dropping things while doing chores, struggling to button a shirt, or massaging their hands when they think no one is watching. Yet whenever we ask, “Okay ka lang?” (Are you okay?) They often brush off what they feel is part of aging.
Vitamins B1+B6+B12 (Neurobion)’s new ad reflects this common scenario – something even I have experienced with my parents as well. But what if it’s more than just aging?
Peripheral neuropathy is a form of nerve damage that affects the nerves controlling our movements, muscle functions, and the sensations in our hands and feet. It usually starts with mild symptoms: tingling, numbness, and slower movement.
Some of the early signs of nerve damage in the elderly can be subtle such as frequently closing fists, stretching arms, or massaging hands. When these strike, our parents tend to just endure the discomfort, dismissing these early signs as normal feelings of “pins and needles” or ngalay. They often only become alarmed when it severely affects their mobility –causing difficulty walking, trouble grasping items, or a loss of balance. People may also experience sleep disturbance or injuries they don’t notice, all due to advancing nerve damage
That’s why this condition is so often overlooked. A study suggests that nearly 1 in 5 elderly over the age of 40 may be living with peripheral neuropathy, with many enduring the discomfort for years before seeking help. Today, 80% of peripheral neuropathy remains undiagnosed, leaving many people without the care they need.

Anchored by its tagline “Caring for the Hands that Care,” Vitamins B1+B6+B12 (Neurobion) premiered its new ad on June 3 at the Luxent Hotel in Quezon City, in the company of healthcare professionals. The video’s storyline tugs at the heart of its audience by highlighting the mundane, everyday moments shared with parents experiencing the early onset of neuropathy. The ad grounds itself in a relatable reality–much like the son on screen, who wouldn’t find themselves deeply moved and inspired to promise that same care back to their parents?

Even as our parents insist that there’s nothing wrong, Dr. Elaine Cheeay Cunanan, consultant internist and endocrinologist at the University of Santo Tomas Hospital, warned that aside from mobility issues, peripheral neuropathy can affect more than just movement and balance. People with the illness may also experience sleep disturbance or injuries they don’t notice. “Left unaddressed, nerve damage can reach a stage where recovery becomes difficult. But when identified early, it can be managed with treatment, and quality of life can be significantly improved,” Cunanan said.
Vitamins B1+B6+B12 (Neurobion) offers a simple step families can take to help recognize early signs of nerve damage – free of charge – via the Neurometer.
Families can access the Neurometer online. It features a quick and simple digital self-screening questionnaire that helps assess a person’s risk for nerve damage. P&G Health general manager Vidya Murthy said the tool was created by peripheral neuropathy experts from ten countries and multiple specialties.

“By taking [and encouraging] their loved ones for a simple nerve health check, [we can enable] earlier diagnosis and timely treatment, [leading to an] ultimately much better quality of life, which is what we all aspire [for.] Because the hands that have cared for us over all these years, deserve our care back,” Murthy said.
