Unlike most custody solutions, Digital Asset Haven positions itself as a complete digital asset operations ecosystem, covering everything from secure wallet creation and transaction approvals to post-trade settlement and compliance management. The initiative reflects IBM’s long-term strategy to fuse its decades of enterprise computing expertise with the emerging infrastructure of tokenized finance.

Merging Traditional Finance With Web3 Security

Developed in partnership with Dfns, a French fintech known for wallet infrastructure and security, the new platform brings together two complementary worlds: IBM’s high-assurance computing and Dfns’ experience in large-scale wallet orchestration.

Dfns currently powers over 15 million digital wallets across 250 clients, providing the operational backbone for major fintech platforms. By integrating its infrastructure with IBM’s hardware security modules (HSMs), quantum-safe cryptography guidance, and cloud environments, the partnership aims to deliver one of the most secure institutional frameworks for digital assets to date.

Why Institutions Need It Now

The move comes amid an accelerating push toward tokenized securities, stablecoins, and programmable money, as banks and governments explore blockchain for settlement and asset issuance.

IBM sees Digital Asset Haven as a bridge between traditional finance and regulated digital markets, allowing institutions to engage with cryptocurrencies and tokenized assets without compromising compliance or data integrity.

“Institutions want to join the digital asset economy, but they need the same level of assurance that exists in core banking infrastructure,” said Tom McPherson, General Manager of IBM Z and LinuxONE. “With Digital Asset Haven, we’re giving them the resilience and governance they’ve asked for.”

Built for Compliance and Scale

At its core, the platform revolves around a policy-driven governance system — where every wallet, transaction, and approval process can be configured to meet local regulatory mandates. Its multi-party authorization workflows and programmable access controls allow institutions to replicate existing banking hierarchies within a blockchain environment.

IBM has also pre-integrated the system with KYC, AML, and identity verification providers, enabling compliance checks at every layer of the transaction chain. For developers and fintech partners, it includes REST APIs and SDKs, making it easier to plug third-party services directly into the platform.

Security Built Into the Hardware

A major differentiator for IBM’s platform is its security architecture. Digital Asset Haven relies on IBM’s Crypto Express 8S modules, embedded in IBM Z and LinuxONE servers, to handle digital signing and key generation.

It also incorporates Multi-Party Computation (MPC) for distributed signing and IBM’s Offline Signing Orchestrator (OSO) for cold storage operations — both critical for compliance in tightly regulated jurisdictions.

By combining hardware-based security with cryptographic redundancy, IBM says the system can support regulated institutions preparing for future quantum computing threats while maintaining seamless operational performance today.

From Custody to Full Lifecycle Management

Digital Asset Haven goes far beyond basic custody. It offers transaction lifecycle management that automates routing, validation, and settlement across more than 40 public and private blockchains, including major enterprise networks.

This full-stack approach allows financial institutions to treat digital asset operations like any other back-office function — programmable, auditable, and compliant — rather than as an experimental or siloed activity.

Strategic Availability and Outlook

IBM plans to roll out the new platform in stages: a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model and Hybrid SaaS version will launch in Q4 2025, while an on-premises deployment is expected by mid-2026.

Though the product announcement focuses on infrastructure, the message is clear: IBM is betting on a future where tokenized finance becomes a mainstream pillar of global banking.

By merging cloud-scale performance, regulatory-grade security, and blockchain-native design, Digital Asset Haven positions IBM as one of the few enterprise players capable of servicing both government and institutional clients in the emerging digital asset economy.
