Rap sensation Cardi B burst onto the airwaves with her hit single “Bodak Yellow” in 2017, the same year she married rapper Offset from the group Migos. Together they have three children: Kulture, Wave Set, and Blossom, who was born in 2024. Though the couple became known for lavish displays of affection through the years, gifting each other everything from cash to luxury cars, mansions, and jewelry, unfortunately, their massive success was not a marker for a blissful union.

Signs of trouble appeared in September of 2020 when Cardi first filed for divorce, though she and Offset quickly reconciled at the time. Then, in 2024, news broke that Cardi filed for divorce again, just one day before she announced her pregnancy with Blossom. More than a year later, their divorce is not yet finalized, and Cardi has been speaking openly about proceedings in her signature frank discussion style – offering the public a crash course in protecting both one’s heart and one’s assets.

From Love to “No Love”

Cardi B (née Belcalis Almánzar) is more than a rapper. She is a mother, a brand, and a public figure navigating emotional and financial transparency in real time. The cracks in her relationship with Offset, from public arguments to rumored infidelity, have been just as well-documented as their over-the-top romance was in the early years. These days, she is publicly addressing some of the deep emotional wounds those relationship fractures caused.

In a recent podcast, Cardi shared that she “felt the love dying” in her marriage long before the couple split, and admitted to choosing loneliness to preserve peace – especially as she was pregnant with their daughter Blossom. In another interview, she shared that she was “too depressed to record” for weeks, describing the feeling as “withdrawing from love.”

This type of honesty about the raw, emotional side of a marriage ending is uncommon in Hollywood today, where there can be an emphasis on handling divorce cases discreetly and privately. Cardi B and Offset’s struggles are a reminder that love, marriage, heartbreak and its aftermath are immune to fame. These are the same struggles we divorce attorneys see day in and day out as we meet with clients experiencing some of the worst times of their lives.

The “Money Bag”

Perhaps the biggest lessons from Cardi’s divorce are financial. Court filings from earlier this year reportedly showed Offset demanding spousal support and shared custody of their children. Recently, Cardi hosted her own livestream explaining why the divorce is not yet finalized, revealing the “only reason why I’m still married is because somebody wants me to pay for their taxes… and give them one of my properties.” She emphasized that the delay is more transactional than relationship-driven, underscoring that she felt Offset’s financial demands were unreasonable.

Whether a couple is famous or not, marital agreements like a prenup or postnup can save spouses a significant amount of time and heartbreak should their marriage end. When emotions are high and the hurt is so fresh, legal arrangements previously agreed upon by both parties can bring clarity and prevent an already painful process from dragging on for longer than necessary. Financial preparedness is as important as emotional closure especially when joint features, shared business ventures, or other shared assets are being created by couples during the marriage.

Co-Parenting Through Conflict

Cardi B’s 2024 divorce filing requested full custody of the couple’s three children. When Offset responded, it was with a request for joint legal custody, with Cardi’s home being their primary residence. Cardi has publicly criticized Offset’s parenting efforts, including how infrequently he interacts with the children. She has also opened up about tension in their parenting relationship, expressing that he has “hate in his heart” that affects their ability to seamlessly co-parent. Still, Cardi has said that she aspires to be on good terms with her ex and maintain a friendly relationship while raising their children.

Cardi B is now expecting her fourth child with New England Patriots Wide Receiver Stefon Diggs, who faces multiple paternity claims. She has handled the situation with honesty and resilience, saying they’ll work through it together.

Co-parenting during or after a high-conflict divorce requires clear boundaries, structured communication, and a focus on the well-being of the children. Creating a detailed plan with clear boundaries helps prevent additional conflicts and provides some stability to children. However, when friendly co-parenting seems impossible, couples can always turn to “parallel parenting,” reducing direct communication between ex-spouses while attempting to give children a stable experience. Beyond that, in the most contentious situations, the courts may have to get involved, which can get very costly and harm kids emotionally. Focusing on the best interests of the children, as Cardi seems to be doing, is always the best approach.

The completion of her divorce from Offset may not be the final chapter in Cardi B’s public relationship struggles. She is currently expecting her fourth child with NFL player Stefon Diggs, who has been named in a paternity suit filed by a woman claiming he is the father of her infant daughter. Reports suggest Diggs may have fathered other children as well. Cardi’s response captures the resilience and honesty she is modeling for her fans throughout this challenging time: “We’ll figure it out.”
