Greenzone

When TGL begins its second season December 28 on ABC, the changes will be noticeable to fans who tuned in for season 1. For starters, TGL is increasing the size of the putting surfaces by 38%, from 3,800 sq. feet to 5,270 sq. feet. This green size will now be very similar to the average size of greens that players play week in and week out on the PGA Tour.

Another change being made to the rotating green deals with the knoll or mound that is in the center of it, which will be lowered by 18 inches. This will soften the grade or slope of the green, which should lead to opportunities to not only fly the ball all the way to the hole and stop on pitch shots, but also open up bump-n-run opportunities for players when around the green.

TGL

By softening the grade of the green, TGL will also have more available hole locations to use. The original green was able to have 7 different hole locations, but because of the slope getting reduced, 5 more hole locations will be usable for a total of 12.

All of the green work will be a collaboration between TGL and Beau Welling Design over the offseason and will be ready to go when TGL gets started again for season 2 shortly after Christmas.

There will be noticeable differences around the green as well with the small pot bunker being removed and enlargement of the other two bunkers. Not only will the two bunkers be larger, they will now also feature revetted bunker faces instead of the smooth transition of last year between the bunker and green. This could add some excitement if balls get stuck near the face of the bunker.

Improved Graphics

Graphics will see an improvement in season 2 as well at TGL. Fans have been promised that on-screen graphics will be enhanced to add to the realism of the simulated holes. Holes will also have “localized backdrops” on Team Holes for all 6 franchises in the TGL league. The idea is, the more real the holes seem, the more fans will stay watching for the full broadcast.

New Tee Boxes and Strategic Options

Finally, holes will be designed with different tee boxes and other features that impact strategy. These changes are slated to be announced in the coming months leading up to the season opening event on December 28.
