Netflix’s The Witcher Season 4 is here with Liam Hemsworth taking over for Henry Cavill.
Based on The Witcher novels by Andrzej Sapkowski, Season 1 of the series kicked off in 2019 with Cavill starring as the titular Witcher — Geralt of Rivia — along with Anya Chalotra as Yennifer and Freya Allan as Ciri. While Cavill reprised Geralt for Season 2 in 2021 and Season 3 in 2023, he announced in an Instagram post in 2022 that he was leaving the show and wished luck to his successor, Hemsworth, who would be taking over the role in Season 4.
All eight episodes of The Witcher Season 4 were released on Thursday. The logline for the season reads, “After the Continent-altering events of Season Three, Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri find themselves separated by a raging war and countless enemies.
“As their paths diverge and their goals sharpen, they stumble on unexpected allies eager to join their journeys. And if they can accept these found families, they just might have a chance at reuniting for good.”
For viewers wondering about the fate of the series now that its fourth season has been released, there’s good news. Not only did Netflix announce the renewal of The Witcher for a fourth season in April of 2024, but the streaming platform also indicated that it had given a green light to the fifth and final season.
According to Netflix, Seasons 4 and 5 of The Witcher feature the adaptations of Sapkowski’s remaining novels — Baptism of Fire, The Tower of the Swallow and Lady of the Lake.
‘The Witcher’ Showrunner Promises An ‘Epic And Satisfying Conclusion’
In the press release about the fourth and fifth seasons of The Witcher, Netflix noted that the seasons would be shot back-to-back. The release date for Season 5, however, has not yet been announced.
“It is with huge pride that we begin shooting our penultimate Season of The Witcher with a stellar cast, including some exciting new additions, led by Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia,” showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich said in a statement.
“We’re thrilled to be able to bring Andrzej Sapkowski’s books to an epic and satisfying conclusion,” she added. “It wouldn’t be our show if we didn’t push our family of characters to their absolute limit — stay tuned to see how the story ends.”
The Witcher Season 4 has been met with a rough reception from critics and fans. As of this publication, Rotten Tomatoes critics have given Season 4 a 56% “rotten” rating based on 18 reviews. In addition, Season 4 has earned 17% “rotten” Popcornmeter score based on 250-plus verified user ratings.
